BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Hillsdale senior sprinter Kajsa Johansson was the star of the final day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Crossplex, securing her status as a national title winner in the 200-meter dash.

Johansson gave the Great Midwest Athletic Conference a total of three individual national champions including Findlay's Sterling Mungro (weight throw) and Tiffin's Ralph Casper (shot put).

It capped a tremendous effort and display by conference qualifiers on the national stage as 28 total All-American performances were officially recognized from the league by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The top 8 placewinners in each respective event were awarded First Team All-American honors and 9th through 12th were pronounced with Second Team All-American status.

Johansson was actually a three-time All-American at the indoor championships, capturing a 200-meter title, finishing runner-up as a member of the conference record-holding 4x400-meter relay unit and competing in the 60-meter prelims.

Johansson was the top time in Friday's prelims at 24.13, breaking the conference record, and she did it again in prime time during Saturday's final heat. Johansson was a blur in 24.03 seconds to beat out Emmanuel's Jharna Alston, who had a time of 24.35 seconds.

For the third time in 2020-21, the Chargers quartet of Johansson, conference freshman of the indoor meet Shura Ermakov, Alanna O'Leary and Dakota Stamm, established a new Great Midwest record in the 4x400-meter relay.

This go around, the group combined for a new record time of 3:47.45, national runner-up by only 0.36 seconds to Colorado Mesa.

The Great Midwest had three different All-Americans in both men's pole vault and women's high jump competitions. Cedarville's Tommy Ansiel was the national runner-up while Hillsdale's Ben Raffin and Collin Jasin of Tiffin were bookend finishers for First Team All-American honors.

Tiffin's Mercedeez Francis was the national runner-up in the high jump followed by 2019 national champion and Dragon teammate Marisa Gwinner in third while Findlay's Brooke Mangas placed sixth.

The women's 3K final saw two distance standouts from Malone and Walsh earn First Team All-American awards with Malone's Mackenna Curtis-Collins finishing in third and Walsh's Alexa Leppelmeier placing seventh.

In more field event excellence, Findlay's Martin Etsey, the conference indoor field athlete of the meet, took fourth in the triple jump and Tiffin's Lloyd McCurdy was sixth. Findlay's Xavier Marable was eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.39 as he became a three-time All-American in his signature event. Likewise, Findlay teammates Morgan England and Lindsey Kluesener were able to climb to exceptional heights in pole vault for USTFCCCA All-American status.

The coaches will vote on Great Midwest men's and women's yearly award winners shortly after the conclusion of nationals. The official all-conference team from the indoor season with the championship meet at Cedarville will also be announced.

Future 2021-22 Great Midwest member Ashland was crowned the team champion with 70 points as do-it-all senior Trevor Bassitt put on a show in multiple events. Tiffin had a top-10 finish on the men's side in ninth with 22 points while Hillsdale's women also had a top-10 team finish with 19 points.
