INDIANAPOLIS –
Cedarville University and the Doden Field House will serve as the host to the 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday this weekend.

Due to COVID-19 institutional protocol, fans are not permitted to attend this year’s championships. The event will be streamed in its entirety on the Great Midwest Digital Network and can be viewed online or through apps available through Apple TV, AmazonFire TV, Android TV and Roku by searching for the key words “Great Midwest.”

The official conference championships page including clickable links for the schedule of events, heat sheets, live results, record books and photo galleries, can be viewed here.

Tiffin’s men and Hillsdale’s women are the defending conference team champions and previous championship meet records will be targeted throughout the weekend. Provisional qualifiers will aim for automatic marks and auto qualifiers are still looking to better their position in the TFRRS Division II Performance List.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has been fortunate to conduct as close to a full playing season as possible with multiple institutions hosting events including Hillsdale, Findlay and Tiffin.

Most programs have been able to compete in at least two events and some programs have been entered in 4 or 5. Navigating a difficult space has been a challenge, but ultimately will reward competing student-athletes that are slated to compete.

The top 3 placewinners in each event will receive all-conference honors and different graphics will be posted throughout the conference social media channels to commemorate their accomplishments with meet records.

The Great Midwest Men’s & Women’s Track, Field and Freshman Athletes of the Meet will be recognized in the awards ceremony. Those individuals will be determined as those who have earned the most amount of points towards their team totals.

In addition, the Great Midwest Elite 23 award winners will also be honored for the first time in the sport. Previous winners in the 2020-21 academic year have been awarded at cross country and most recently, the wrestling championship meet in Owensboro, Ky.

Two different overall conference records on the men’s side have been set this year with Hillsdale’s 4x400-meter relay and the weight throw (Findlay’s Sterling Mungro). The conference features at least 1 provisional qualifier in the 60 (Elijah Gauldin – Tiffin), 200 (Josh Verhoff – Findlay), 400 (Xavier Marable – Findlay) and 800 (Gabriel Foster – Findlay). Walsh’s Jacob Caniford has the league’s top times this season in the mile and 3K and the Cavaliers sport two provisional qualifiers (also XC standouts) in the 5K, Noah Murray and Drew Roberts. Walsh also has a provisional qualifying time in the distance medley relay.

The pole vault for both men and women just might be the most competitive events to monitor throughout the weekend. Paced by overall record holder Tommy Ansiel (Cedarville), the men have four other provisional qualifying heights from conference participants including last year’s conference champion Collin Jasin of Tiffin.

The women are headlined by Findlay sophomore Morgan England, who recently shattered the conference overall record. Teammates Lindsey Kluesener and Meadow Cromer compete with her every week and Tiffin’s Madeline Hayes cleared 4.00m towards the end of January.

The throws have two Tiffin stars as can’t-miss talent with senior Nikolas Curtiss and junior Jabari Bennett as auto qualifiers. The Dragons currently boast five of the six provisional shot put qualifiers from the league. The other is Mungro, a multiple auto qualifier in the weight throw who has earned field athlete of the week plenty in 2020-21.

Tiffin carries the top seed in both long and triple jump with Quincy Scott and Lloyd McCurdy. Findlay’s Martin Etsey is the conference record holder in triple jump. Kentucky Wesleyan’s Adam Bouchard and Findlay freshman Aaron Cooper have both cleared 2.01m in the high jump.

In the women’s running events, Hillsdale’s Kajsa Johansson has seemingly outdone herself each week with new conference records in the 200m and part of the 4x400-meter relay. The Chargers won last year’s conference championship through the 4x400 relay and the same foursome has actually broken the league record twice this season. Johansson is the favorite in the 60 and 200 going in while the Chargers also have the top seeds in the 400 and 800 with Dakota Stamm and Calli Townsend.

Two-time Great Midwest Cross Country Runner of the Year Mackenna Curtis-Collins leads a strong distance field in the mile. She also has the top time this season in the 3K while Hillsdale’s Maryssa Depies and Walsh’s Alexa Leppelmeier have also recorded provisional times. The 5K top seed is Claire McNally of Hillsdale and the Chargers are in great position for the DMR. Tiffin has the top three times this season in the 60-meter hurdles led by Rajiah Andrews.

Defending national champion Marisa Gwinner (from 2019) is one of six provisional qualifiers in the high jump. Two different volleyball student-athletes from host Cedarville are in that impressive list, Lyssi Snouffer and Lauren Willow. Also included is Tiffin’s multis star Jazilee Williams, defending pentathlon champ. Williams cracked the top 10 list in the long jump this season and will have to contend with Findlay’s Simone Green, who is top seed in the triple jump.

Like the men, shot put has considerable depth with four juniors as provisional qualifiers led by Tiffin’s Nicole Berry. Hillsdale’s Nikita Maines has the top mark in the women’s weight throw.
