INDIANAPOLIS – Tiffin and Ashland were named recipients of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week as announced on Tuesday morning.
Track Athlete of the Week
Malachi Adams
Tiffin
Sprints
Sophomore
Adams cracked the top 10 performance list in an event that has been dominated by former Tiffin standout Jonte Baker since the Dragons have joined the conference.
The sophomore speedster clocked a 6.76 in the 60-meter dash at the Andres Family College Open in his season debut.
Adams initially finished fourth in the prelims with a time of 6.93 before blazing his way to a share of the ninth-fastest time in conference history. He also finished runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.40.
Only Tiffin runners have a top 10 spot in the 60-meter dash Great Midwest record books between Baker, Lamar Hargrove and now Adams.
Field Athlete of the Week
Brent Fairbanks
Ashland
Throws
Senior
Austintown, OH (Austintown Fitch HS)
The men’s weight throw has featured several NCAA individual champions, specifically Sterling Mungro and Austin Combs (twice), in one of the conference’s most successful events on the big stage.
Add Fairbanks to that list as he carved out the top distance in Division II this season following his performance at the Youngstown State Holiday Classic.
Fairbanks is now ranked fourth all-time in conference history in the event with a distance of 21.43m only behind Mungro and Combs.
The Eagles’ senior, even though a newcomer to the conference this year with AU’s outstanding program, is certainly a national title contender given his status as a three-time NCAA All-American.
