INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference had strong representation on the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) academic awards that were published for the 2019-20 academic year this week.
Both Great Midwest member institutions and a number of individuals earned various USTFCCCA All-Academic Team awards and USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete honors.
Seven different men’s track and field programs were rewarded with the organization’s all-academic team award and nine women’s programs fielded the same team honor.
Cedarville, Hillsdale, Malone, Ohio Dominican, Tiffin, Trevecca Nazarene and Walsh, each saw both of their men’s and women’s programs recognized for a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
There was a total of 114 men’s programs recognized for their work in the classroom in Division II. The women had a cumulative total of 149 for academic excellence in 2019-20.
Incoming 2021-22 league member Ashland, coached by Jud Logan, was also among the Division II ranks with both men’s and women’s programs recognized.
For USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete honors, the Great Midwest had 27 different individuals represented who met the organization’s stringent criteria. Ashland also had 17 student-athletes make the grade with at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA.
All told, there were 208 men from 73 Division II schools recognized and an additional 321 women from 93 institutions named all-academic athletes. All selections must have achieved either a provisional or automatic-qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Tiffin’s multis star Cameron Burrows and thrower Nikolas Curtiss were previously CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Hillsdale’s distance standout Joseph Humes was crowned the Great Midwest Male Collegiate Achievement Award winner earlier in the summer to cap the 2019-20 academic year.

Senior Andra Leohtay was the Great Midwest Female Collegiate Achievement Award winner. Tiffin had four, all specialists in field events along with defending national champ Marisa Gwinner (high jump). Cedarville and Hillsdale, the reigning conference indoor team champion, combined for six more women’s selections.
