INDIANAPOLIS – Over 100 student-athletes were recognized among the top place winners to comprise the 2019-20 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field All-Conference Team.
It was another banner season for Great Midwest member institutions as 31 national qualifiers from the league were poised to make their mark at the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala., to transition into the outdoor season.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and the subsequent cancellation of all NCAA Winter & Spring Championships, everyone Is left wondering what might have been.
The Great Midwest Indoor Track & Field Championships were housed in Tiffin’s Heminger Center as the host Dragons secured another men’s team title and Hillsdale captured its second (in three years) women’s championship trophy.
The all-conference team is composed of a first team, second team and a third team, with the top finish in either track or field event taking priority if a student-athlete was entered in multiple events.
Tiffin led all schools for both men’s and women’s selections with a combined total of 26 (15 men, 11 women) to the all-conference team.
The coaches also voted their picks for end-of-the-year awards, separate from the meet awards that were presented at Tiffin. Despite the canceled NCAA Championships, there was plenty to consider for the body of work put together by automatic and provisional qualifiers from the conference.
The yearly individual awards for the men were almost identical to the meet awards as Findlay sophomore Xavier Marable was pronounced the Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Year, Tiffin senior Cameron Burrows was the Great Midwest Field Athlete of the Year and Tiffin’s Jeremy Croy was chosen Great Midwest Coach of the Year.
Findlay short sprints rookie Josh Verhoff was selected as the Great Midwest Freshman of the Year.
The women had a similar turnout as Walsh senior Andra Lehotay reeled in Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Year, Tiffin junior Jazilee Williams was Great Midwest Field Athlete of the Year and Hillsdale’s Andrew Towne was the favorite for Great Midwest Coach of the Year.
Tiffin’s Keyonna McGill duplicated her meet feat by securing Great Midwest Freshman of the Year status.
