TIFFIN, Ohio – From coaches, student-athletes and fans alike, the energy levels were high from all 13 institutions as the first day of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships came to a close on Friday at Tiffin’s Heminger Center.
A total of 10 event champions (six women, four men) were crowned on the first day while a handful of preliminary events on the track were also conducted.
The crowd and participants were vocal and supportive all day – but the sound reached a different level with the running of the men’s and women’s 4K distance medley relay to end the day.
Make no mistake about it – with the number of automatic and provisional qualifiers from the league, making it to the podium as one of the top three placewinners is a big-time accomplishment.
Two meet records were broken on day one, both from the women’s competition from the pole vault and the pentathlon.
Tiffin junior Jazilee Williams stole the show in the pentathlon with a new meet record of 3,655 points as she won the 60m hurdles, shot put and long jump. She was also runner-up in the high jump and the 800-meter run.
Williams recorded the third-most points in a multis competition in conference history. Her new point total broke the 3,459 point barrier by former teammate Kirsten Camp just set last year.
Williams then bested the field in the long jump with a distance of 5.62m and was second in the 60-meter hurdles prelims.
Freshman Lindsey Kluesener of Findlay was able to shatter the pole vault championship meet record, officially passing the previous high height from former NCAA qualifier Kaitlyn Barber of Walsh. Kluesener is just one week removed from auto qualifying from nationals and recording the No. 2 height in conference history, only to Barber. (4.02m to 4.01m).
The women’s pole vault featured a rare three-way tie and gave the Oilers a share of the top finishers in the event -- all underclassmen.
Another event with all three finishers from the same team was the men’s long jump as Tiffin’s Cameron Burrows headlined a trio of Dragons, including auto NCAA qualifier and current meet record holder Quincy Scott taking runner-up.
Tiffin currently leads the men’s team scoring with 53 points through four scored events. Walsh has the early advantage in a very close team scoring race on the women’s side with 51 points through six events scored.
Day two competition will start at 10 AM ET on Saturday morning with many more event champions waiting to be crowned. At the end of the meet, a photo gallery will be made available to the public.
