INDIANAPOLIS – Hillsdale and Cedarville student-athletes were selected for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week recognition on Monday afternoon.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ryan Thomsen
Hillsdale
Sophomore
Multis
Escondido, CA (Calvin Christian HS)
Thomsen provisionally qualified for nationals with one of the conference’s best scores registered in the heptathlon at the Hillsdale Wide-Track Classic.
The sophomore scored 4,927 points in the seven-event competition for third place all-time in Great Midwest history behind Findlay’s Trey Everett and Tiffin’s Cameron Burrows.
Thomsen finished first in the 1,000-meter run and recorded runner-up finishes in the shot put and high jump.
He was fourth in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles while also placing third in pole vault and long jump.
Thomsen’s heptathlon point total ranks among the top 25 in Division II for the current indoor season.
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Tommy Ansiel
Cedarville
Sophomore
Pole Vault
Warrenville, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South HS)
In a case of ‘anything you can do, I can do better,’ it was Ansiel’s turn to rise to the top in what has become a competitive rivalry with Tiffin’s Davis Bowers in the pole vault.
At the Cedarville Collegiate Indoor Invite, the sophomore skied over 5.25m (17’ 2.75”) for a new conference record.
Ansiel also now ranks second in all of Division II with his new PR and overtook Bowers for the best in the Great Midwest. He has auto qualified for indoor nationals that will be held at Pittsburg State this year.
Ansiel only trails Central Missouri’s Vincent Hobbie (5.34m) for the top mark in the country.
This is Ansiel’s second conference career weekly honor for the current indoor season.
