FINDLAY, Ohio – Tiffin is out in front with the early lead in the men’s and women’s team scoring after the first day of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
Ten different events were officially completed and student-athletes blazed their way to impressive times in the prelims en route to Saturday’s finals in running events.
Tiffin’s women made quite the first impression in the Dragons’ first conference championship meet as a member of the Great Midwest.
TU started things in record-breaking fashion courtesy of Kristen Camp in the penthatlon with the first of several conference meet bests broken. Camp overtook teammate Jazilee Williams in the final event, the 800-meter run, to total 3,459 points.
Another Tiffin title went to Tiffin’s Shelbe Evans in the women’s long jump (5.61m), an event that has been dominated in recent history by former Ursuline star Janelle Perry.
Cedarville’s women also broke the conference meet DMR record as the Yellow Jackets enjoyed a sweep in both men’s and women’s races.
Walsh went 1 and 2 in the women’s weight throw with upperclassmen Mariah Porter and Malia Turley pushing each other in the finals.
Davis & Elkins received its first conference indoor champion as freshman Emeric Arnaud held off the field in the 5K. The women’s 5K featured some very familiar names from the cross country season, including first-place winner Christina Sawyer of Hillsdale. Great Midwest XC Runner of the Year Brianna Coy was second and cross country freshman of the year Gabrielle Lawrence (Findlay) was fourth.
The event of the day may have been the men’s long jump as three different competitors not only broke the conference meet record, but the overall Great Midwest record that was previously held by Findlay’s Trey Everett (7.22m)
Tiffin’s freshman Quincy Scott stole the show with a winning leap of 7.61m on his final attempt, but great competition was provided from runner-up Cameron Burrows (Tiffin) and Findlay’s Martin Etsey, already an auto qualifier in triple jump.
Competition was fierce in the throws cage as defending national champion Austin Combs won the weight throw
Cedarvile’s Tommy Ansiel and Hillsdale’s Ben Raffin officially matched the conference championship meet record from James Blackwell as each cleared 4.93m. Ansiel, tied for No. 2 in the country in the event, was declared the winner.
Day 2 from the Malcolm Athletic Center continues with the completion of the men’s heptathlon with Hillsdale’s John Baldwin currently the front runner. More throws and field events will also be completed while finals of sprints and more relays will also be conducted.
