Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week (Jan. 30)

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week were awarded to Hunter Williams of Walsh and Austin Combs from Findlay on Tuesday.
 
It was another strong week for the track events as three events posted season-best standards. The top four times in the 800-meter event for the men’s were put up this past weekend, with Cedarville’s Daniel Michalski leading the way.
 
Hillsdale’s Joseph Humes, a previous selection for Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Week, set a new conference record in the 3K distance

Williams had a strong performance this past weekend at the SPIRE Midwest Open with a new conference record to his credit.
 
Williams ran in the 200-meter dash and finished second in the event with a time of 21.98, which is the fastest in conference history. He broke the record previously set by Kentucky Wesleyan’s James Glenn by almost three tenths of a second.
 
He also placed fifth with the 4x400-relay team at the invitational alongside Bryce Ostheimer, Solomon Yoder and Brandyn Neal. Their time of 3:24.08 is the second-best time in the conference to this point in the season.

Combs repeated for conference weekly honors with a dominant outing at home in the Findlay Elite Classic & Throws.
 
The junior followed up a week in which he broke the conference record in men’s shot put with another record-breaking performance, this time in the weight throw.
 
He broke his own league record from December with a throw of 21.38 meters on Friday.
 
Combs ranks second in all of Division II in both the shot put and the weight throw while automatically qualifying for nationals in both field events.
