INDIANAPOLIS – Cedarville junior Carsyn Koch (Washburn, Maine) was selected as the 2016-17 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Female Athlete of the Year on Thursday following a vote from administrators around the league.
Koch’s trail of success in the sports of cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field is unmatched in the league’s five-year history as she has established herself in elite company nationally an all-time great.
She won both NCAA Division II Championship titles in the 800-meter run, successfully repeating in both events during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Koch also swept the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor and outdoor campaigns.
In 2016-17, she was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American in track and field in the following events: 800 (indoor), distance medley relay (indoor) and 800 (outdoor). During the Great Midwest Outdoor Championships at Cedarville, she was named the league’s track athlete of the year.
She also established the top times in NCAA Division II for the 2017 season in the 800 (indoor), 800 (outdoor) and 1,500 (outdoor). All-time in NCAA DII history, she ranks No. 1 in the 800 (outdoor) and No. 2 in the 1,500 (outdoor).
Koch primed for track and field in the fall by helping the Yellow Jackets make their first NCAA Championships appearance that resulted in an 11th-place showing. Cedarville also won its fifth consecutive women’s cross country title.
She also earned high academic marks on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team as she pursues her degree in nursing.
Outside of the collegiate realm, Koch also traveled to Sacramento, Calif., for the USATF Outdoor Championship and clocked a 4:21.93 in the 1,500-meter run. It was her first appearance in the event.
Koch was also the 2015-16 G-MAC Female Athlete of the Year as a sophomore.
