CEDARVILLE, Ohio
– It was a banner day in all aspects for Malone after winning the 2017 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Men’s Track & Field Championship on Saturday.

A combination of depth and balance helped the Pioneers earn their first conference title of any sport since joining the G-MAC for the 2016-17 academic year. With the team win, Malone stopped a run of back-to-back indoor team titles claimed by meet host Cedarville in 2015 and 2016.

The Pioneers broke a total of six G-MAC meet records on their way to hoisting the school’s first G-MAC trophy that will be housed in Canton. But a total of 12 total records set by just seven schools was a feather in the cap for the league’s third annual conference indoor meet.

Malone broke G-MAC meet records in the long jump, triple jump, weight throw, shot put, 55-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash.

Individual awards were also voted upon by the coaches at the conclusion of the meet inside the Doden Field House on Cedarville’s campus. The Pioneers swept all four possible honors during the awards ceremony presentation.

Setting three total conference meet records was Malone sophomore speedster and G-MAC Track Athlete of the Year Ashton Dulin. Dulin’s long strides and quick burst helped him haul in 850 receiving yards on the football team before making the seamless transition to the track.

He was already a provisional qualifier coming in and managed to set G-MAC meet records in the long jump, 55-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash, for the trifecta of titles. Dulin’s long jump mark was an all-time G-MAC indoor record.

G-MAC Field Athlete of the Year honors were earned by Malone senior Duke Taylor, a record six-time winner of conference weekly awards regardless of sport. Taylor’s body of work throughout the indoor season in the weight throw put him in the top 10 nationally in the event. On Saturday, he had the crowd in awe of his tosses, but unfortunately didn’t place. He still broke the conference meet record in the shot put.

Winning the G-MAC weight throw title was another Malone football standout, senior Austin Cary, who also earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in the current year.

Rookie Ja’Vonne Brashears was honored as the G-MAC Freshman of the Year. Brashears won the triple jump with an all-time G-MAC record distance of 13.39m while placing runner-up to teammate Dulin in the long jump.

Not surprisingly, the G-MAC Coach of the Year in his first attempt with the league was presented to Malone’s Mark McClure. He mentioned his squad was methodical and everyone did their job to help contribute to the final point totals. The Pioneers put up a total of 203.5 points against Cedarville’s 192.5 for second place in the seven-team race.

Two different meet records were set by James Glenn (Kentucky Wesleyan) in the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash while Daniel Michalski (Cedarville) set the mile record by nearly 10 minutes and set a new 800-meter run standard. Josiah Bernard (Cedarville) had the facility buzzing early in the day after he set a new high jump record. Another broken record included the 5K (Ben Moroney - Trevecca Nazarene).

This was the third annual indoor conference meet in the league’s history. With the addition of first-year G-MAC member Malone and first-year track and field programs from Davis & Elkins and Ohio Valley, the competitiveness was raised another bar as the league prepares for more established programs like Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh, to enter the scene in 2017-18.

Both OVU and D&E had their first all-conference selections as new track and field programs with Evan Matheny (400m), Justin Thompson (3K) and Dalton Irvine (high jump).

Alderson Broaddus placed third with 73.5 points while Kentucky Wesleyan was in fourth with 51. D&E’s first conference meet produced a fifth-place finish followed by Trevecca Nazarene and Ohio Valley, respectively.

Official all-conference award winners (based on placement) will be announced in the next day as they are finalized.
