GAMBIER, OH – A balanced effort by a deep Cedarville men’s program translated into a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship title at the league’s inaugural event.
Cedarville’s Jeff Bolender was voted by his peers as G-MAC Coach of the Year while Yellow Jackets’ pole vault specialist James Blackwell was named the G-MAC field Athlete of the Year.
Other individual award winners from the coaches voting included Darin Gooch of Central State as G-MAC Freshman of the Year while Trevecca Nazarene’s Logan Rodgers and Central State’s Romario Mckenzie shared G-MAC co-Athlete of the Year honors.
Mckenzie beat Kentucky Wesleyan’s Tevin Washington in a photo finish at the line of the 60-meter dash by a hundredth of a second. Gooch and Mckenzie showed off their blazing speed by placing 1-2 in the 200-meter dash.
The Yellow Jackets accumulated a total of 183 points while Central State pulled in as the runner-up with 98.
Trevecca Nazarene (75), Alderson Broaddus (52) and Kentucky Wesleyan (40) comprised the remainder of the men’s scores, respectively.
Several Cedarville freshmen, including Josiah Bernard, also played an integral role in the 4x400-meter relay-winning unit and he stormed his way to the 400-meter dash title and runner-up placement in the high jump to teammate Samuel Tvarzik. CU rookie Daniel Michalski, won the 3k run by over six seconds.
Cedarville owned the 800-meter run run with six runners placing in the top eight led by Philip Dannelly. Forrest Thayer captured first in the mile leading the Yellow Jackets to finish with four in the top six.
Blackwell hoisted himself over a clearing height of 4.93 meters to win the pole vault. Freshman Philip Thompson finished runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.63m.
Cedarville’s distance medley team squeezed another first-place finish by edging out Trevecca Nazarene.
Jacob Goble of Alderson Broaddus won the shot put, throwing the shot put at a distance of 13.41m.
Rodgers, and Josh Winskie of Trevecca Nazarene finished 1-2 in the 5K run. Fellow Trojan and freshman Talon Bullock won the triple jump with a distance of 12.62m.
