NEWPORT, Ky. – The 2026 Conference Carolinas/Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Bowling Championships kicked off on Friday with an action-packed first day of competition. While top-seeded Conference Carolinas programs set the pace in qualifying, G-MAC teams delivered several of the day's most thrilling moments during the opening rounds of baker match play.

Women's Championship: Walsh Pulls the Upset, Thomas More Takes #2 to the Brink
In the women's qualifying rounds, Belmont Abbey (2,700) and Emmanuel (2,600) established the top two seeds. However, a trio of G-MAC programs packed the middle of the standings, with Ursuline (2,355), Walsh (2,339), and Thomas More (2,227) securing the third, fourth, and fifth seeds, respectively.

As the tournament transitioned into Round 1 match play on Friday afternoon, the G-MAC programs brought the heat:

  • Match 3: In the closest matchup of the opening round, #4 Walsh outlasted #3 Ursuline in an all-G-MAC battle. After falling behind early, Walsh showed incredible resilience, rallying to force a game seven and ultimately claiming the series 4-3 to advance in the winner's bracket.

  • Match 2: The #5 Thomas More Saints proved they are a threat to anyone in the field, taking #2 seed Emmanuel to the absolute limit. In a tightly contested back-and-forth battle, Thomas More forced a decisive seventh game before Emmanuel narrowly escaped with a 4-3 series win.

  • Match 1: Top-seeded Belmont Abbey continued its momentum, handling #6 Barton with a 4-1 victory.

Men's Championship: Thomas More and Walsh Set for Saturday Showdown
On the men's side, Belmont Abbey (2,971) and Emmanuel (2,865) claimed the top two spots in qualifying. The G-MAC was well-represented right behind them, with Thomas More knocking down 2,683 pins to claim the #3 seed, and Walsh posting a 2,473 to take the #4 seed.

In the opening round of match play:

  • Match 1: #4 Walsh found themselves in a grind against #5 Barton. Despite a strong 208 in game five to keep their hopes alive, the Cavaliers ultimately fell 4-2.

  • Match 2: #3 Thomas More ran into a red-hot Emmanuel squad. The Saints battled hard but were defeated 4-1 by the second-seeded Lions.

Because Belmont Abbey received a bye in Round 1 as the top seed, they will face Barton to open Round 2.

Looking Ahead to Day 2 The championships will resume on Saturday, March 21, with pivotal matchups that will test the resilience of the G-MAC contenders.

In the women's bracket, #4 Walsh will look to keep their winner's bracket run alive against #2 Emmanuel, while #3 Ursuline faces #1 Belmont Abbey. In the elimination bracket, #5 Thomas More will square off against #6 Barton as both teams fight to keep their championship hopes alive.

In the men's bracket, Saturday kicks off with a massive all-G-MAC elimination showdown as #3 Thomas More takes on #4 Walsh. The winner will advance to face the loser of the Belmont Abbey/Barton matchup, keeping their title dreams intact.
