2024 Great Midwest Wrestling Championship Preview

TIFFIN, Ohio- The first winter G-MAC championship is set to take place this weekend as Tiffin University will host the 2024 Wrestling Championship on Saturday, Jan. 27.
 
Matches are set to begin at 10:00 A.M. ET. Coaches will rank eight wrestlers per weight class, with six being seeded. After the top six are selected, wrestlers will be randomly drawn into the bracket.
 
Brackets on TrackWrestling will be released following the coaches meeting and will be updated in real time for the duration of the tournament. Each school was permitted to submit two (2) entries per weight class and the top advancing wrestler will count towards the team point scoring totals.
 
The Great Midwest is well-represented on an individual level in various Division II national rankings published this season. The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recognizes 10 wrestlers from the league in their respective weight class rankings.
 
Lake Erie enters Saturday’s match with the highest team ranking at No. 8. Head Coach Boomer Fechko currently has four wrestlers ranked in the top of their weight class. Leading the way in the 149 lbs. weight class is senior Christian Small. Small is at the top of his weight class with a 9-1 record on the year and has outscored opponents 72-13 this season. Junior Jack Haskin is ranked second in the 157 lbs. weight class. Haskin is undefeated so far this season, outscoring opponents 183-39. James Penfold and Cory Gamet have also found success this season for the Storm. Penfold is ranked No. 9 at 174 lbs. and Gamet is No. 10 at 141 lbs. Lake Erie holds a 6-5 overall record  this season.
 
Ashland and Tiffin also both find themselves in the national poll in a tie for 19th. The trio of Daniel Beemer, Drew Wiechers, and Nate Barrett have led the Eagles so far this season. Beemer is ranked as the second-best wrestler at 184 lbs. Wiechers is 11-3 and ranked No. 9 at 157 lbs. while Barrett (15-5) is No. 10 at 174 lbs.
 
Zack Donathan is having another standout year for the Dragons after winning a national championship last season. Donathan is 12-0 this season and has outscored his opponents 47-0. Also ranked nationally is 157-pounder Casey Barnett who is 10-3 this season.
 
Findlay won the programs first Great Midwest Championship last season and will look to repeat as champs under the leadership of Graham Shore. Shore finds himself at No. 12 in the national rankings at 125 lbs. Last season, Shore was named the G-MAC Wrestler of the Meet after winning the 125lbs. weight class. The Roughnecks are receiving votes in the latest NWCA poll.
