OWENSBORO, Ky.- The top-seeded and regionally ranked Tiffin program triumphed to win their second consecutive Great Midwest Men’s Tennis Championship.
The Dragons (20-2) defeated the No. 3 seed Walsh (11-10) in a 4-1 final.
The early momentum was in Tiffin’s favor as the Dragons scored doubles wins at No.1 and No.2. The combos of Michael Gurtner and Matt Telford won 7-5 at and Ruben Fonga and Matt Weaver prevailed 6-1.
Walsh’s tandem of Blas Ruiz and Luis Hernandez Ceballos earned a doubles win for the Cavaliers at No. 3 by a 6-2 count.
Tiffin won singles matches at the No. 1, No. 2, and No.3 position. Great Midwest Player of the Year Ruben Fonga picked up a 6-1 and 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Michael Gurtner and Matt Telford also won at singles over their opponents. Gurtner was victorious in a 6-4 and 6-0 decision, while Telford won by scores of 7-5, 6-2.
Tiffin’s Great Midwest Coach of the Year Phil Conley will learn where his program will be headed in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Monday, April 24 at 8 P.M. ET.
