INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletes of the Week for February 14, 2022, are based on student-athlete performance from February 7, 2022 – February 13, 2022.
Baseball
Henry Mosley – Trevecca Nazarene / Jr. / RF / Hermitage, Tennessee
Mosley came up big for Trevecca helping the Trojans go 2-1 on opening weekend of the season picking up two wins against Rockhurst. The right fielder went .500 at the plate (8-16) over a three-game span. The junior added to his offensive performance with seven runs, including a double, triple, and a home run to go along with .875% slugging. Mosely also added six RBI.
Will Gifford – Hillsdale / Jr. / P / Golden, Colorado
In just his second career start, Gifford was a force to be reckoned with on the mound against No. 15 Davenport. After a win in game one, the junior hurler picked up the win, 13-4, in game two of Friday night’s doubleheader in Hoover, Ala. Gifford struck out 12 of the 23 batters he faced without recording a walk. In those six innings pitched, the Colorado native allowed just three hits and one earned run.
Men’s Basketball
Wesley Jordan – Tiffin / So. / Forward / Indianapolis, Indiana
Jordan helped the Dragons to a 2-1 week picking up two league wins over Trevecca. Over those three games, the sophomore averaged 20 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. The forward shot 55.8% from the field to go along with 38.4% shooting from behind the arc. Jordan’s highlight of the weekend came against Kentucky Wesleyan when he poured in a career-high 31 points.
Women’s Basketball
Sha Carter – Walsh / Sr. / Guard / Southfield, Michigan
For the third time this season, Walsh’s Carter is tabbed with athlete of the week honors. Carter helped her team to three wins averaging a double-double (23.7 PPG, 10.7 RPG) for the week. That’s to go along with 3.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game. The senior shot .610% from the field and went 3-of-8 from three-point land. Carter also etched her named in the Cavalier record books becoming Walsh’s all-time leading scorer.
Men’s Bowling
Jordan Norris – Walsh / So. / Canton, Ohio
Norris continued his dominance on the lanes at the Ohio Bowling Conference #4 this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The sophomore won his second tournament MVP of the season with a first-place finish. Norris finished the tournament with a 995 series over four games for a 238.75 average. His high-game came in his last when he rolled a 286. The Cavilers finished in second place as a team.
Women’s Bowling
Emily Kiss – Walsh / Sr. / Tallmadge, Ohio
For the second week in a row, Kiss is named athlete of the week for her performance on the lanes. The senior finished fourth in this weekend’s Ohio Bowling Conference #4 tournament in Columbus. Kiss rolled a 790 with a 197.5 average. Her high-game came in her third game of the day when she bowled a 222. Walsh finished the tournament in second place in the team standings.
Men’s Indoor Track & Field
Jacob Ott – Walsh / Sr. / Throws / Chillicothe, Ohio
Ott competed in this weekend’s Reggie Thomas Classic at Tiffin where he secured a first-place finish in the weight throw (20.18). The throw measured for a NCAA DII provision mark as well as earning the senior the third best throw in Division II this season. Ott also finished third in the shot put at the event (16.26).
Doniven Jackson – Ashland / So. / Sprints / Reynoldsburg, Ohio
Jackson secured two top-twelve performances at this weekend’s Big Meet at Grand Valley State. The sophomore crossed the finish line in the 60-meter dash in 6.75 seconds, the second-best time in the Great Midwest and the eighth-best in Division II this season. In the 200-meter, Jackson stopped the clock in 21.39 seconds giving him the twelfth-best time in Division II this season.
Women’s Indoor Track & Field
Marisa Gwinner – Tiffin / Sr. / Jumps / Galion, Ohio
Gwinner secured first-place in the high-jump (1.77m) over the weekend. That jump earns her a provisional mark as well as the top mark in the event in the conference this season. Her performance is the third-best jump in Division II this season and is second in the Great Midwest record books behind her own performance (1.80m) from the Great Midwest Indoor Championship in 2020.
Ines Macadam – Tiffin / So. / Distance / Entre Rios, Argentina
Macadam set a provisional mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.66. That performance ranks her No. 12 in Division II this season. It’s the fastest 800m time in the Great Midwest this season and ranks No. 10 in Great Midwest history. Macadam also set a new school record with her time.
Men’s Lacrosse
McGarity Harper – Seton Hill / Grad / Attack / Ijamsville, Maryland
Harper helped the Griffins pick up their first win of the season, 18-5, over Malloy. The Maryland native led Seton Hill with six points on four goals to go along with four assists. Harper helped jumpstart the offense scoring the first two goals of the game less than two minutes into the contest. Seton Hill returns to action Saturday hosting Chestnut Hill.
Logan Gray – Seton Hill / Sr. / Midfield / Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania
The Griffins swept the athlete of the week honors in lacrosse for the week. Gray helped Seton Hill control possession for much of the match. The senior mid won 14 face offs of his 16 attempts helping the Griffins win the face off battle 22-5. Gray was also credited with 11 gorund balls in the win.
Softball
Madison Shemwell – Ohio Dominican / Jr. / 2B / Owensboro, Kentucky
Shemwell had an outstanding weekend at the plate. Over four games, the junior hit .714 going 10-of-14 in three wins and one loss. Shemwell added to her stat line with 6 RBI to along with a homerun. The Panther’s second baseman also recorded three stolen bases on the weekend.
Ashlan Sensing – Trevecca Nazarene / Fr. / P / Dickson, Tennessee
In her first collegiate starts, Sensing picked up two wins for the Trojans, who went 2-2 on the weekend. The freshman recorded 16 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched walking only two, over two games. During those 10 innings, Sensing allowed just seven hits and three runs.
Men’s Tennis
Sean Barstow – Hillsdale / So. / Las Vegas, Nevada
Barstow went 2-2 this weekend with an undefeated day against Purdue Northwest, teaming with Tyler Conrad to win at No. 1 doubles 7-6 with a 10-8 tiebreak, and 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles against the Pride.
Women’s Tennis
Emily Barrett – Tiffin / Fr. / Norwich, United Kingdom
Barrett went 3-0 in singles play this weekend with all of those wins coming in three-set victories. Barrett beat Wayne State 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, beat Lake Superior State 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, and beat No. 21 Farris State 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. She also had a doubles win against Lake Superior State 6-3.
Wrestling
Chance Esmont – Ashland / Sr. / 157 LB / Pickerington, Ohio
Esmont recorded two wins at 157 pounds against Mount Union and Glenville State. The senior pinned his opponent from Mount Union in 1:29. He also grabbed a 12-3 major decision over his opponent from Glenville State. Both helped the No. 12 Eagles to wins against Mount Union and Glenville State as a team.
