INDIANAPOLIS – After an exciting fall semester, three Great Midwest institutions are in a tight race for the 2022-23 Presidents’ Cup. Ashland leads the way after the completion of the 2022 fall sports season with 50 total points.
It was quite an eventful first semester for the Eagles. Ashland finished the conference regular season at or near the top of four of the conference’s six fall championship sports. During that run, the Eagles finished as regular season runners-up in both the men’s and women’s soccer standings. Both teams would go on to find success in each of the Great Midwest soccer championships grabbing titles on both the men’s and women’s side. Ashland volleyball was crowned regular season champions before bowing out of the conference tournament in the quarterfinals. The Eagles capped off a semester full of success as, now retired, Lee Owens and Ashland football captured their first Great Midwest Championship finishing at 7-1 in conference play.
The Eagles are nowhere near comfortable with just a half-point lead over Cedarville who finishes the fall season with a Great Midwest title in women’s cross country and regular season title in women’s soccer. The Yellow Jackets finished no lower than sixth in any of the five conference championship sports in which they compete for in the fall.
Four-time defending Presidents’ Cup Champion Findlay still sits in position to capture its fifth-straight cup slotted in third place with 49 total points after competing in all six of the Great Midwest championship sports this fall. The Oilers finished in the top-half of all six sport standings including a runner-up finish in the Great Midwest football standings and a third-best finish in volleyball.
Walsh and newcomer Northwood round out the top five with 46 and 44.5 total points respectively.
The Presidents' Cup is awarded to the institution that collects the highest tally of points based on regular season winning percentage (standings) or individual meet results (sports with no conference regular season schedule) through the completed spring championship season.
