INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of finishes flirting with medalist contention were recognized as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week performances.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Blain Turner
Trevecca Nazarene
Senior
Mt. Juliet, TN (Wilson Central HS)
Turner tied for second in a strong field at the Midwest Regional at Fox Run in Eureka, Mo., as the Trojans were one of four Great Midwest teams competing.
Turner (77-72-68--220) was only three shots behind the top pace set by McKendree’s Phasin Vichitcharoenpaisam (217) as the Trojans finished fifth with a three-round total of 910 (303-302-305).
Turner had already tied for first at the Findlay-hosted Doc Spragg Invitational earlier in the fall. This was his second tournament of 2021-22.
The senior’s scoring average sits at 71.66 through six rounds. TNU is scheduled to wrap up the fall at the Tulsa Cup on Oct. 25-26 later this month.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Jill Schmitmeyer
Findlay
Senior
St. Marys, OH (St. Marys HS)
The Oilers showed why the program is among Division II’s elite with an amazing performance at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial hosted by North Georgia.
Seven programs in the field, including Findlay, were ranked in the WGCA Top-25. Findlay crushed both the team single-round and tournament scoring records with a 278 (-10) in the final round and 853 (-11) for 54 holes.
Schmitmeyer, the league’s reigning player of the year, was as consistent as could be with all three rounds in the red numbers.
The senior finished third overall with a 71-70-69 and a total of 210. She was 6-under par for the tournament and was named conference athlete of the week for the second time in 2021-22.
Her scoring average is pacing the Great Midwest at 74.23 through 13 rounds counted and five events played.
