INDIANAPOLIS – Findlay and Ohio Valley received Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week honors as several more tournaments were completed during the 2020-21 season.
Walsh hosted an invitational with several Great Midwest teams in attendance. Isabelle Castro tied for top honors in the women's scoring as the Cavaliers finished second as a team. In the men's tournament, Noah Frase led Walsh to a team title with a runner-up finish.
Ohio Valley hosted the Shriners Children Hospital Intercollegiate and Kyler Dennis was the medalist while teammate Agustin Araki was also tied for first before a playoff ensued. Carter Dodson paced Kentucky Wesleyan with a top-20 finish at the Flyer Intercollegiate as well.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Sam Griffith
Findlay
Senior
Findlay, OH (Findlay HS)
It was a record-breaking feat on several different levels for Griffith as Findlay was second at the Brickyard Invitational, a 54-hole tournament in the heart of the fall season earlier this week.
The senior set a new school record for the lowest tournament score and posted the second-best 54-hole total in conference history with a cumulative score of 8-under par at Brickyard Crossing GC.
Griffith finished with a two-day score of 208 to place runner-up in the individual standings only behind UIndy’s Keegan Bronnenberg (-11).
Griffith was in the top 10 with teammate Tanner Grzegorczyk (9th). His second-round score of 67 (-5) was the lowest for the tournament field and ranks among the best 18 holes in Great Midwest history. He also tied his personal best round after a 67 (-5) in last year’s SVSU Spring Invitational.
His 54-hole total of -8 is second only to the Trevecca Nazarene tandem of Larken Whittemore and Blain Turner, who both went -12 at the Mississippi College Invitational in 2018.
Griffith entered this season with a career scoring average of 74.90, ninth all-time in conference history since 2012 among qualified players with 36 or more completed rounds.
His 2019-20 scoring average of 73.13 during the shortened campaign is 12th best in conference history.
This is his second conference career weekly honor. He also was named athlete of the week in 2018 with a 6-under par 210 at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invitational. Findlay claimed back-to-back weekly conference honors following the selection of freshman Justin Atkinson.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Joslyn Goins
Ohio Valley
Senior
Zanesville, Ohio (Zanesville HS)
Goins was named Great Midwest Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career as she led the Fighting Scots to a first-place team finish and took individual medalist honors at the Shriners Children’s Hospital Intercollegiate.
Ohio Valley shot 331 on day one and followed with a 325 on day two at the Marietta Country Club. The Fighting Scots finished with a 32-hole score of 656, 51 strokes better than second place.
Goins posted a first-round score of 79 (+7) and improved four strokes in the second round for a score of 75 (+3). She finished 3-over par with a 36-hole score of 154.
The senior ranks in the top 20 for career individual scoring average (18 holes) in the conference record books. Her finish at the 2019 Great Midwest Fall Preview ranks 18th all-time for an individual tournament score (36 holes).
The Ohio Valley women’s golf team will be back in action October 9-10 at the Tiffin Fall Invite.
