Golf Athletes of the Week (Sept. 23)

9.23.20

INDIANAPOLIS – Two more events were completed in the fall season as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week honors were announced on Wednesday afternoon by the league.

Ohio Dominican served as host for the women’s Cumberland Trail Fall Classic in Pataskala, Ohio, while Findlay welcomed a number of Great Midwest member institutions for the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational that wrapped up on Tuesday.

Men’s Athlete of the Week
Justin Atkinson
Findlay
Freshman
Brookfield, OH (Brookfield HS)

In his collegiate debut, the freshman Atkinson paced one of Findlay’s three teams entered in for scoring as the Oilers hosted the Doc Spragg Invitational at the Findlay Country Club.

Atkinson finished third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 213 (72-68-73) as his score with Sam Griffith, Donnie Professori, Luke Kelly and Tanner Grzegorczyk, put the unit runner-up only behind UIndy.

Atkinson was also named to the Doc Spragg All-Tournament Team. His single round of 68 (-4) is tied for the second-best 18-hole score in the league this year behind Hillsdale’s George Roberts (67) while matching Trevecca Nazarene’s Blain Turner.

Atkinson is second in the conference in scoring average through the early part of 2020-21 (71.00)

The Oilers are back on the links next Monday at the Indianapolis Brickyard Fall Invitational.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Christina Williams
Malone
RS Junior
Medina, OH (Highland HS)

The all-conference performer and NCAA qualifier Williams is right at home in the Cumberland Trail Fall Classic after successfully defending her title for back-to-back medalist honors.

It was the Pioneers’ second event of the fall season after starting the year at the UIndy Fall Invitational.

Williams had a two-day score of 148 (73-75) to win by two strokes over the field. She saved par on the 18th and final hole after finding sand to retain and ultimately hold on to the lead.

Malone also finished runner-up in the event only to Tiffin as the Pioneers enjoyed their third-best team tournament score (634) and the fifth-best 18-hole team score (316) in the process.

Williams has now completed five rounds in 2020-21, and has a scoring average of 76.20 as one of the top five in the conference. This is her third conference career weekly honor.

Williams was also named to the Cumberland Trail Fall Classic All-Tournament Team along with teammate Jocelyn Troyer.

Malone will be back in action this week for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children event hosted by Ohio Valley on Friday and Saturday.
