Golf Athletes of the Week (Oct. 7)

10.7.20

INDIANAPOLIS – Teams couldn't have asked for better weather over the past few days as student-athletes went low for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week honors that were announced Wednesday.

Ohio Dominican's women won the Fall Cougar Classic hosted by Mount Vernon Nazarene as Bailey Krueger and Shannan Ireland both tied for medalist honors with 36-hole totals of 151.

The William Beall Fall Classic at Findlay CC included five Great Midwest programs including the host Oilers, Malone, Tiffin, Trevecca Nazarene and Walsh. The Oilers were runner-up only to UIndy as their regional rivalry continued in another entertaining tournament finish.

Tiffin's men also hosted the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invitational over the past few days as Findlay's men continued their torrid 2020-21 season pace for top team honors.

Think of how many points you would accumulate by correctly spelling the Findlay junior's last name in a fun game of Scrabble.

Tanner G. was on fire at the Kyle Ryman Memorial Invitational as he collected medalist honors in the three-round event hosted by Tiffin with a total score of 209 (69-67-73). The Oilers won the two-day tournament with a total of 16 teams in the field.

He recorded the third-best tournament score in conference history (-9) only behind the Trevecca Nazarene tandem of Larken Whittemore/Blain Turner, who both were 12-under par at the Mississippi Invitational.

Grzegorczyk carried the torch for a Findlay program with incredible depth as senior Luke Kelly and freshman Justin Atkinson tied for second just three strokes behind their teammate's pace.

Caleb Westfall and last week's conference athlete of the week, Sam Griffith, also were in the mix as UF's "A" unit were top 12 individually or better.

That group also tied the conference single-round record with a 273 (-15) in the second round and posted the second-best tournament score in conference history with an 845 (-19).

Grzegorczyk also set the conference scoring record after 36 holes with a 136 (-8). He came into the tournament tied for 13th in the conference in scoring average and moved into the top five with an updated total of 72.33 through nine rounds played.

This is his first conference career weekly honor.

The Tiffin Dragons competed at the annual William Beall Fall Classic at the Findlay Country Club on Monday, Oct. 5 and Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Dragons were among five Great Midwest teams in attendance.

Findlay was the top finisher from the Great Midwest, finishing second behind UIndy. Tiffin placed third as a team with a three-round score of 958 (322-314-322).

Alice Putoud finished second by two strokes among the 49-player field with a 54-hole score of 222 (76-70-76). Her low round of 70 (-2) marks the best round played so far this season by anyone in the conference.

The senior ranked seventh in the Great Midwest in career individual scoring average (18 holes) heading into this season with an average of 77.93 through 41 rounds played.

This is the fourth time Putoud has been named Great Midwest Athlete of the Week, as she won the weekly award three times in the 2018-19 season.

The Dragons will host the Tiffin Fall Invite Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11 at the Mohawk Golf Club.
