INDIANAPOLIS – With four teams out of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference qualifying for the NCAA Championship bracket in Super Region 3, it was a banner season for the sport of men’s soccer as multiple media outlets published their traditional postseason awards.
Record breaking numbers across the board from the Great Midwest came from the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA), College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and United Soccer Coaches organization.
Ohio Valley went the deepest into the national championship bracket, pushing to the Sweet 16 in Louisville, Ky., at Bellarmine University. The Fighting Scots, an at-large selection, ended the 2019 season ranked No. 18 in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Cedarville advanced through to the second round after defeating Wisconsin Parkside while Lake Erie and Tiffin each had opening-round byes. Tiffin received the AQ on Selection Sunday as the Dragons went back-to-back for conference tournament titles.
Talented student-athletes from the league excelled on and off the field with impressive athletic and academic achievements.
In the D2CCA All-Midwest Region Team, regular season conference champion and Super Region 3 top seed Lake Erie, had five total selections to match Bellarmine with the most. The Storm had three of those standouts, Jonathon Carr, Tom John and Omar-Oliveros-Alvarez, all receive D2CCA All-American recognition.
Carr and Oliveros-Alvarez had previously received individual Great Midwest conference season awards as the offensive player of the year and defensive player of the year. Carr was also named the Midwest Region Player of the Year after leading the league in goals and points.
The D2CCA All-America Team (formerly Daktronics) is a tough one to crack. In the league’s history, only three other names have been on the list since 2012: Cedarville’s Connor Gilmour (2014, 2015), Davis & Elkins’ James Pucci (2013) and Ohio Valley’s Carlos Rubio (2017).
Carr also made the United Soccer Coaches All-America Team (formerly NSCAA) as the Great Midwest’s lone first-team selection as Gilmour (third team) and Rubio (second team) were the only previous conference representatives since the league’s inception.
Carr and Oliveros-Alvarez doubled down on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team for their work in the classroom and were joined by sophomore Jamos Hauk all on the first team.
