INDIANAPOLIS
– Tiffin University made a splash in the updated Division II Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup standings, highlighting 10 Great Midwest Athletic Conference institutions in the new list published this week.

Tiffin is one of four Great Midwest schools in the top 100 of the spring scoring, which includes golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis and outdoor track and field.

The Dragons accumulated 178.50 in the spring sports, excluding baseball, to stake claim to 25th overall among all Division II schools.

The first full year with Tiffin as a Great Midwest member has been an impressive one with baseball, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field and men’s tennis conference championships secured this spring.

Tiffin also finished runner-up in the 2018-19 Great Midwest Presidents’ Cup standings. It was a very close second for the Dragons, who also finished runner-up in the women’s lacrosse playoffs.

Tiffin’s biggest point gain was with men’s track and field and a fifth-place team finish for 75 points out in Kingsville, Texas at the NCAA Championships. Junior sprinter Jonte Baker dashed his way to two national titles in the 100-meter distance and as a member of the 4x100 relay.

Tiffin’s men placed seven student-athletes on the awards podium as NCAA All-Americans. The women’s program also delivered 48.5 points for the spring as freshman Marisa Gwinner brought home a national championship in the high jump.

Also contributing 55 points was Tiffin’s women’s golf program under the direction of Brittany Davidson. The Dragons almost made the cut at the East Super Regional to qualify for stroke play at the NCAA Championships in Florida.

Closely behind Tiffin’s 427 points is Findlay in 36th with 350.75. The Oilers brought home the Great Midwest Presidents’ Cup and had similar success to Tiffin in the same sports mentioned above.

UF’s women’s golf was the team champion at the East Super Regional in Owensboro, Ky., and made the NCAA Championship stroke play portion while facing eventual national champ Florida Tech in medal play to tie for fifth.

Eldred Henry made more noise in the throws competition with a shot put national championship, ultimately breaking the overall Division II record after having done so during indoor as well. Teammate Austin Combs was also the NCAA runner-up in the hammer throw and Henry was a discus All-American.

Walsh came in 54th with 304 points and Hillsdale checked in at 71st with 263.50 points. A national championship from sophomore Tommy Ansiel in the pole vault gave Cedarville 45 points for the spring while Trevecca Nazarene’s men’s golf success gave the Trojans their first appearance in the standings.

TNU racked up 72.75 points with a fifth-place tie in the national championships. Similar to the Findlay women, the Trojans qualified and made the cut at the Central/Midwest Regional before heading out to West Virginia to finish in the top eight of championship stroke play. The conference champion Trojans then competed in championship medal play vs. Florida Southern.

Malone gained 34.5 points as senior George McCartney closed out his career in fine fashion at track nationals in the 10K with an All-American race. The Pioneers are ranked at No. 192. Kentucky Wesleyan and Alderson Broaddus remained idle at No. 246 and No. 262, respectively. Ohio Valley also retained 123 points and is ranked No. 148 overall.

The final Division II Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup standings will be released on June 12 to officially conclude the 2018-19 academic year.
