LEXINGTON, Ky. – Prior to the start of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship, Malone coach Ken Hyland playfully chided his team for playing great in terrible conditions and conversely, not so great in beautiful weather.
Well, the Pioneers delivered on that backwards premise through 36 holes at the University Club of Kentucky, leading the race in team scoring battling inclement weather conditions on the Big Blue Course.
Malone (298-295—593) holds a two-shot lead over Trevecca Nazarene and Findlay, programs that have both celebrated a conference title.
Championship caliber golf is still being played by teams trailing within striking distance including regionally-ranked Hillsdale, first-year competitor Tiffin along with Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley, in the top half of the field.
Rain was the constant on Friday as temperatures dipped and the winds picked up. Play continued without interruption or delay and the course proved to be playable for all 20 groups as they started off the first and 10th tees.
Malone was the only team to show at least one stroke of improvement in its second-round score (Kentucky Wesleyan matched its first-round total), as Connor Curry leads the way tied for second.
The most recent athlete of the week, Scotty Brown, lived up to his billing with a round of even par to finish out the day, and Jarrod Kasunick is also tied with Brown for seventh going into the final round.
Leading all individuals is freshman Caleb Westfall from defending conference champion Findlay as he fired round of 73 (+1) and 71 (-1). He carries a one-shot lead into Saturday ahead of Curry and last year’s medalist from Trevecca Nazarene, Blain Turner.
Westfall showed poise that might go against conventional thinking of a rookie in his first conference championship. In his second round, he posted four birdies on the front nine to go into the turn with a 32 (-4).
Also lurking behind is TNU’s Larken Whittemore, tied for fourth Ohio Dominican’s Robert Holden and the first-round leader Tiffin, Britton Hensel. Hensel carded round numbers in the opening 18 with a 2-under 70.
Tee times for the men will start off split tees once again on the Big Blue Course starting at 9 a.m. ET.
