INDIANAPOLIS – Malone and Findlay earned Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week honors as announced on Wednesday.

Teams around the league are getting ready to travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Great Midwest Championships that will be conducted at the University of Club of Kentucky on the Wildcat (women) and Big Blue (men) courses.

Both genders are scheduled to play 36 holes on Friday and Saturday while the annual championship banquet is on Thursday evening.

Men’s Athlete of the Week
Scotty Brown
Malone
Junior
Lebanon, OH (Lebanon HS)

Brown was the medalist at the Ohio Dominican-hosted Bill Blazer Memorial at Cumberland Trail in Pataskala, Ohio.

Brown helped the Pioneers earn a team title with an impressive two-round score of 139 (-5) going into the conference championship.

The junior fired a first-round score of 74 before going low with a 65 (-7) for the second-best round in the conference this season.

Malone’s second-round team score of 289 also is one of the top 18-hole scoring rounds ranking in the top 25 in conference history.

It was also a new career-best round for Brown, who recorded a 66 (-6) back in 2016 at the Cleveland State Invitational. The all-time conference record is a 64 shared by Trevecca Nazarene’s Larken Whittemore and Ohio Valley’s Adam O’Hara.

Brown has sported a team-leading 74.33 scoring average through 18 rounds and eight events. Two of his three top-10 finishes have been for medalist position. He currently ranks 12th in the Great Midwest in single-round scoring.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Makenzie Torres
Findlay
Senior
Grove City, OH (Grove City HS)

Torres tuned up for the conference championship with a first-place performance at the Cav Classic in Canton at Glenmoor Country Club.

The junior helped the Oilers to a team title and are heavy favorites to repeat for another conference team title later this week. Torres posted a strong score of 148 (71-77) to finish 4-over par for the tourney.

Torres was one of three Oilers to place in the top of the Walsh-hosted event with league schools Alderson Broaddus and Trevecca Nazarene also in the field.

Torres continues to lead the league in scoring average for a second consecutive season. She is now at 75.14 through 21 rounds of play and has five top-10 finishes, including medalist honors in two different events.

This is her sixth career conference weekly honor in less than two seasons. The reigning Great Midwest Player of the Year qualified for the NCAA Championships last season.
