INDIANAPOLIS – Weekend conditions shortened several tournaments as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week continued for the season on Wednesday.
The fall season continues until the end of the month in October. Teams will then take a break over the winter layover and resume competition in the spring while preparing for the Great Midwest Championships.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Connor Curry
Malone
Sophomore
Mount Vernon, OH (Mount Vernon HS)
After posting a scoring average of over 78 through 16 rounds as a freshman, one of the most improved players in the conference has been Curry, who shined once again.
This time, Curry was the medalist at the Davis & Elkins-hosted Snowshoe Invitational, his second individual event win in three tries. He posted rounds of 73 (+1) and 68 (-4) at The Raven Club as the Pioneers finished runner-up as a team.
The sophomore also won the Malone Fall Classic and proved his early start was no fluke at the Great Midwest Fall Invitational, where he finished fourth in the field.
Curry has established himself with one of the top 10 best scoring averages per 18 holes this season in the league.
Curry’s season scoring average is now 72.11 on the season.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Lexie Shaw
Trevecca Nazarene
Senior
Knoxville, TN (South Doyle HS)
Shaw delivered her first career victory at the Flyer Women’s Intercollegiate hosted by Lewis University as the Trojans completed their third event of the season.
Shaw had five shots of cushion between her first-place position and the runner-up tie between two different golfers from Northeastern State.
The all-conference senior posted back-to-back rounds of 74 (+2) to finish with a 36-hole total of 148. The Trojans would go on to finish 11th in the team scoring.
Coming into the Flyer Intercollegiate, Shaw had a scoring average of 75.25 in four rounds, both resulting in top 10 finishes. Her scoring average is now at 74.80, one of the top marks among all players in the league this year.
