INDIANAPOLIS – New Great Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Athletes of the Week were announced on Wednesday morning from Cedarville and Findlay.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Jared Hoelzen
Cedarville
Senior
West Burlington, IA (Homeschool)
Hoelzen and the Yellow Jackets tamed the Country Club of the North at the Cedarville Invitational.
The senior claimed medalist honors in the field and also helped his team to a victory at their home event.
Hoelzen won by a four-stroke margin as Cedarville won by seven shots with scores of 306-300--606. He was one of two Yellow Jackets on the six player all-tournament team.
Hoelzen has had top-20 finishes this fall at the ODU Kickoff Classic and the Great Midwest Fall Invitational. This is his second career conference weekly honor (fall of 2018).
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Jill Schmitmeyer
Findlay
Sophomore
St. Marys, OH (St. Marys HS)
From the very beginning, Schmitmeyer was thrust into the limelight for a high-caliber program like the Oilers as one of the starting five.
Her continued development has been key for a top-10 WGCA team as Findlay tied for second at the Dayton Fall Invitational with the host Flyers.
Schmitmeyer anchored UF’s strong performance as she tied for fifth in a field of nearly all Division I competitors (Ohio Dominican was also in the field).
She fired rounds of 76 (+4) and 74 (+2) as the winner of the event was competing unattached from Ohio State.
Schmitmeyer went into the week ranking fourth in the conference in scoring average. She improved her 18-hole average to 75.27 through 11 rounds scored.
