INDIANAPOLIS – Several teams hit the links to start their 2018-19 campaigns with the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Athletes of the Week awards announced on Wednesday.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Jared Hoelzen
Cedarville
Junior
West Burlington, IA (Homeschool)
Hoelzen was second on the Yellow Jackets in scoring average as a sophomore while producing a pair of top-10 finishes.
His junior campaign was off to a flying start while earning all-tournament team honors at the Ohio Dominican-hosted Kickoff Classic in Blacklick at Jefferson Country Club.
Hoelzen finished third among an 82-player field while posting a two-round score of 142 (-2), including a final round tally of 3-under par 69. His opening round score was still an impressive 73 (+1) and he climbed the leaderboard moving up nine spots from his first 18.
He paced all Great Midwest competitors in the final scoring that included ODU, Findlay and Alderson Broaddus in the team standings.
Cedarville (312-302--614) would end up finishing eighth among 14 schools competing.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Alice Putoud
Tiffin
Junior
Lyon, France (Lycee Frederic Fays)
Tiffin lands its third athlete of the week for the opening week of competition with the selection of Putoud, who helped the Dragons qualify for the NCAA Super Region I regional last spring.
The arrival of a talented Tiffin program to the women’s golf landscape will make competition that much more fierce between defending champ Findlay and five-time champ Trevecca.
The Dragons won their first event of the fall by taking home the team title at the Jon P. Speiss Memorial Tournament in Defiance, Ohio.
Putoud led Tiffin with an 18-hole score of 73 (+1) to claim medalist honors as the top individual.
