2017-18 Men's Golf All-Conference Team (PDF)
INDIANAPOLIS – The 11-member Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf All-Conference Team was announced by the league as coaches voted for individual award winners as the 2017-18 campaign concluded.
In the postseason beyond the conference championship, Findlay was able to recently compete at the NCAA Midwest/Central Regional that the Oilers hosted at the Findlay Country Club.
Trevecca also represented the league with two individuals, freshman Blain Turner and junior Larken Whittemore, qualifying for the regional field.
The Oilers finished 20th in the team scoring with a three-day total of 911 (305-290-316). Findlay received an automatic qualifier ticket into the Midwest/Central Regional after winning the Great Midwest Championship at Four Bridges Country Club in Liberty Township, Ohio.
Justin Roth ended up the top finisher among all Great Midwest competitors as he tied for 51st overall with a 224 (75-73-76).
The all-conference team consists of the top five finishers (including ties) at the Great Midwest Championship with an additional five selections named from a coaches vote.
Findlay led all teams with four selections, including Roth, Cam Wardley, Luke Kelly and Dylan DeWitt. Trevecca, the league leader in team scoring average at 296.83 per 18 holes, had three including Trevor Lay, Turner and Whittemore.
Whittemore was second in the conference in scoring average (72.89) to earn the top honor as Great Midwest Player of the Year. He earned medalist honors in two tournaments, placed in the top 10 four times and fired the best single round in conference history with a 64 (-8) at the Mississippi College Invitational.
Whittemore was even par or better in eight of his 18 rounds and beat out over 80 percent of his opponents faced head-to-head (.802).
His teammate Turner, the conference championship medalist, was the conference leader in scoring in just his first year at the college level to be named Great Midwest Freshman of the Year. His stroke average of 72.65 is a conference single-season record as he completed 21.5 rounds out on the links.
Turner had a low round of 68 (-4) and finished at the top of the individual leaderboard in two events while recording six top-10 finishes.
Great Midwest Coach of the Year honors went to Dominic Guarnieri of Findlay as he completed the sweep for both men’s and women’s hardware. His Oilers ended a five-year run by Trevecca in the conference tournament with a three-round total of 889 (290-305-294). DeWitt was the top finisher with a tie for runner-up with Hillsdale’s Liam Purslowe in the individual scoring.
