2017-18 Great Midwest Men's Tennis All-Conference Team (PDF)
INDIANAPOLIS – Sixteen different student-athletes comprised the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis All-Conference Team that was announced on Thursday evening from Owensboro, Ky.
Kentucky Wesleyan is serving as host to this year’s Great Midwest Championship, with No. 1 seed Hillsdale, No. 2 Findlay, No. 3 Walsh and No. 4 Davis & Elkins in the mix for a conference title.
Semifinal contests will be conducted starting at 1:30 p.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. Voting for the all-conference team and the individual award winners were conducted by the league’s coaches.
Hillsdale landed six players on this year’s all-conference team, including three on the first team and three on the second team. Eight student-athletes from around the league were named to the first team and second team.
Hillsdale completed a perfect run through the conference schedule to be crowned regular-season Great Midwest champions. The Chargers accepted the trophy on Thursday evening that resulted in the No. 1 seed in the championship bracket.
Hillsdale earned two of the three individual award winners with
Great Midwest Player of the Year (Milan Mirkovic) and
Great Midwest Coach of the Year (Keith Turner). Davis & Elkins claimed the
Great Midwest Freshman of the Year (Obert Matthew Mulyadi) award.
Mirkovic was a three-time recipient of Great Midwest Athlete of the Week honors in 2017-18 and posted an impressive win percentage of .647 (11-6) while serving as the No. 1 singles player all year long. The sophomore was just as impressive in the doubles game with teammate Julien Clouette as they combined for 11 more victories. Mirkovic goes into the Great Midwest Championship with a 9-1 record in his last 10 matches.
Mulyadi posted seven wins in singles action, all at the No. 1 slot, for the up-and-coming Senators, who went through a coaching change as Jay Evans works through his first year with the program. The promising rookie earned conference athlete of the week honors in the spring and helped D&E push its way into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the bracket.
Turner has been with the program for four years, recruiting in an off-year cycle as the men’s tennis tradition was revived at Hillsdale with reinstatement. In this third year on the courts, the Chargers dominated the Great Midwest with a perfect 8-0 record in the conference schedule. Under Turner’s guidance, Hillsdale enters the postseason tournament with a 12-6 overall record and winners of eight straight.
The respective No. 1’s from each program in the conference tourney also made the first-team list with Walsh’s Vasily Vidmanov, Findlay’s Carlos Blanco and Davis & Elkins’ Mulyadi, all earning the votes.
Four seniors highlighted the first-team list, including Blanco, Vidmanov, Dugan Delp of Hillsdale and Nicholas Kopylec of Findlay. Four upperclassmen made their way on to the second-team unit, including senior Jonathan Class of Cedarville and a trio of juniors.
