Men's & Women's Golf Athletes of the Week (March 13)

3.13.18

INDIANAPOLIS – Trevecca opened up the spring portion of the 2017-18 with both Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Golf Athletes of the Week honors as announced on Tuesday.

The Trojans turned in a historic performance as the men won the Mississippi College Invitational while the TNU women impressed down in Florida at the GLIAC vs. Great Midwest Match Play Showdown.

Trevecca’s men recorded a single-round team record score of 273 in the first 18 holes, breaking the old record of 280, coincidentally held by TNU fired at the 2017 edition of the Mississippi College Invitational.

The Trojans were 15-under par before shooting a 280 (-8) in the second round and closing with an even-par 288 to win the tournament by 22 strokes. TNU set 18, 36 and 54-hole team records as well.

Larken Whittemore
Trevecca
Junior
Lafayette, TN (Macon County HS)

Whittemore made a little bit of history on his own with a new conference record 18-hole score of 64 (-8) that was carded in the first round of the Mississippi College Invitational. He also won medalist honors after edging out teammate Blain Turner in a head-to-head sudden death playoff.

Whittemore and Turner both tied for the top individual scores in the 55-player field with a 204 (-12).

Whittemore blistered the Lake Caroline Golf Course with a pair of eagles and five birdies as he was four under on the front and four under on the back nine.

After opening up the tourney with a bogey on his second hole, Whittemore had back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes, eagled No. 7 and prepared to go into the turn with another birdie on eight.

On the back, Whittemore made birdie again on the 11th and 14th holes before holing out on the par-5 16th hole to go to 8-under on the day.

Whittemore’s single-round effort of 64 officially bested the 66’s carded by Malone Scotty Brown last season and Kentucky Wesleyan’s Carter Dodson this year. Whittemore remains second in the league in scoring average through five rounds scored at 71.6.

Rachael McMahan
Trevecca
Sophomore
Knoxville, TN (Farragut HS)

McMahan closed the fall with conference weekly honors and opened the spring in the same fashion as she won the stroke play portion of the GLIAC vs. Great Midwest Showdown in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

McMahan tied for first with Grand Valley State’s Maria Sol Pose as both players posted two-round scores of 152.

McMahan fired a 77 in the first round and finished with a 75 at the Saddlebrook Course.

The Trojans would finish fourth out of six teams in the stroke play portion but impressed further by salvaging a draw in match play against nationally-ranked Northern Michigan.

McMahan defeated NMU’s No. 1 Caro Els as TNU and NMU halved their match, 3.5-3.5.
