INDIANAPOLIS – With five schools in the mix for a spring title, Hillsdale was voted at the top of the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll presented by Under Armour on Friday.
The Chargers edged out Walsh in a close vote as teams gear up for the spring with three first-place votes vs. two for the runner-up Cavaliers.
Hillsdale collected 15 points in the balloting with Walsh earning 14. Findlay checked in at third while Cedarville and Davis & Elkins tied for fourth with six points, respectively.
Cedarville, Davis & Elkins, Findlay, Hillsdale and Walsh, will all compete for the Great Midwest Championship trophy on April 20-21.
The Chargers were 13-10 overall in 2016-17 with a postseason victory in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament. Hillsdale is off a 1-0 start during the shortened fall season with a win against Indiana Tech.
Four different Great Midwest Athlete of the Week awards were presented in the fall to Cedarville’s Matt Brumbaugh and Alex Totten, Findlay’s Carlos Blanco and Hillsdale’s Charlie Adams.
Cedarville and Walsh are both off to a 4-1 start in the standings while Davis & Elkins is awaiting to make its dual debut for the season. Findlay is at even .500 with a 2-2 overall record.
Four different players are tied in singles victories at this point in the year with four each, including Walsh’s Heitor Adegas and Guilherme Carneiro along with Philip Brumbaugh and Jonathan Class, both of Cedarville.
Cedarville’s Matt Brumbaugh and Jonathan Class are a perfect 5-0 in No. 1 doubles competition.
Conference play will get underway on Saturday, March 17.
