INDIANAPOLIS – The fall season is coming to a close as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Athletes of the Week accolades were announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Through the seventh week of the season, there were more notable performances across the board in several tournaments.
Ohio Valley’s Adam O’Hara tied the conference’s 18-hole scoring record with a 64 (-8) at the Mount Vernon Nazarene Fall Cougar Classic. He matched the superlative with Trevecca’s Larken Whittemore, who fired a 64 last year at the Mississippi College Invitational.
Findlay’s Luke Kelly won the Motor City Invite hosted by Wayne State and the Oilers claimed the team title as he finished with a two-round total of 147 (+3).
Trevecca proceeded to record the conference’s second-best single round team score with a 280 at the Austin Peay F&M Bank Intercollegiate. The Trojans would finish third and now have three of the top four scorers in the league this year.
The 67 is a popular score among the women this year and for the third time, a player was able to card that same under-par number on the links. This time, it was Findlay’s Samantha Hatter at the Dayton Fall Invitational on a par-70 course layout.
The Oilers now have the conference’s top 10 team scores in the current season and lead all teams in scoring average (298.7) per 18 holes by over 21 strokes each round.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Ryan Rozic
Trevecca
Junior
Melbourne, FL (Viera HS/Eastern Florida State College)
Rozic was par or better in both rounds at the Austin Peay F&M Bank Intercollegiate while shooting a two-day total of 141 (-3). He fired an even-par 72 in his opening round and posted an impressive 69 (-3) in the second round of play.
Rozic is now tied for third in the conference in scoring average with teammate Larken Whittemore through 11 rounds played.
He tied for seventh in a field of 66 players at Greystone GC, where TNU was the lone non-DII school. The Trojans finished third as a team and their round of 280 (-8) is tops in the Great Midwest this year.
It also ties a pair of 280’s shot by the Trojans in both the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Misssipppi College Invitational.
Rozic recorded his second top-10 finish in five events and his scoring average sits at an even 73.00.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Makenzie Torres
Findlay
Senior
Grove City, OH (Grove City HS)
After finishing 30th at the NCAA Championships and seventh at the DII East Regional in addition to winning conference player of the year recognition, Torres makes her first appearance on the list this year after shining at the Dayton Fall Invitational.
Torrest was the best at NCR North with round of 69 (-1) and 70 (E) in a field of 74 players. She joined three Oilers in the top 10 of the individual standings along Samantha Hatter (t5th) and Kristina Kniesly (t9th).
It marked her second top-five finish of the year in just five events and the 69 represented a season-best round for the senior.
Torres is currently second in the conference in scoring average this season through 13 rounds played after being the league leader and single-season conference record holder in that category in 2017-18 (75.39).
Torres is now a five-time Great Midwest Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week winner since Findlay joined the conference in 2017.
