Golf Athletes of the Week (Oct. 10)

10.10.18

INDIANAPOLIS – For most of the Midwest Region, weather was still conducive for perfect playing as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Golf Athletes of the Week were named on Wednesday.

Men’s Athlete of the Week
Sam Griffith
Findlay
Junior
Findlay, OH (Findlay HS)

With six schools from the conference playing at the Kyle Ryman Memorial hosted by Tiffin, Griffith burned through the Mohawk Golf & Country Club at a blistering pace.

While the Dragons won the team tournament behind a runner-up showing from Britton Hensel and additional top-10 finishes from Cameron McCloskey, David Siegel, Noah Barth and Tomas Krivanec, Griffith grabbed medalist honors with a dazzling two-day display.

Griffith put a 210 (-6) on the scorecard during the three-round tournament while posting rounds of par or better in every opportunity.

Griffith’s effort puts him with the third-best 54-hole tournament score in conference history only behind 204 (2x) posted by the Trevecca tandem of Larken Whittemore and Blain Turner last spring.

In the process, he also set a new Oilers’ school record for the lowest relative-to-par-finish.

Griffith held off Hensel by one stroke in the final individual standings. The Oilers were nine shots back of Tiffin in the team scoring and Saginaw Valley State was the lone non-Great Midwest participating school.

Women’s Athlete of the Week
Meredith Wipper
Findlay
Junior
Hilton Head, SC (Hilton Head HS)

There’s a lot of orange and black crowding the top of the scoring leaders in the conference this season and Wipper is right in the mix following her effort at the Beall Fall Classic at the Findlay Country Club.

Wipper won a playoff against sophomore teammate Kristina Kniesly, who previously set the single-round scoring record in conference history with a 67 (-5).

Wipper matched Kniesly’s record-breaking accomplishment in short order to finish with a two-round score of 148 (81-67).

Findlay placed third in the team scoring only behind Missouri-St. Louis and Grand Valley State with a two-day score of 604.

Wipper entered the event ranked third in the conference in scoring average; she improved her scoring average noticeably with a 75.27 in the season through 11 rounds played.
