Golf Athletes of the Week (Sept. 26)

9.26.17

INDIANAPOLIS – After winning the second offering of the Great Midwest Fall Invitational, Findlay swept men’s and women’s golf athlete of the week honors as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The Oilers captured both men’s and women’s team championship trophies at the Findlay Country Club in their first year with the league.

Despite the tournament being shortened to 27 holes due to rainfall during the second round of play, the preview for the spring championship was entertaining as teams tried to establish themselves as contenders.

Luke Kelly
Findlay
Sophomore – Brownsburg, IN (Brownsburg HS)

Kelly was the men’s medalist at the Great Midwest Fall Invitational with an asterisk marking a fun career superlative with his first hole-in-one.

The sophomore found red numbers on the first day of competition with a 70 (-2) that featured his ace on the par-3 12th hole. He holed out from 158 yards away with a 9-iron.

The Oilers had a team score of 436 through 1.5 rounds of play to hold off runner-up Malone by seven strokes. Kelly also had a 69 (-3) earlier this year at the Watrous Intercollegiate, tied for the second-best round in the league this season.

Kelly edged out Malone’s Kyle Barnett for first place by one shot in the individual race.

Through 5.5 rounds and three events, Kelly now sports a 72.0 scoring average for the Oilers this season.

Makenzie Torres
Findlay
Junior – Grove City, OH (Grove City HS)

Torres is a repeat winner of conference weekly honors, going back-to-back from her impressive performance at the UIndy Fall Invitational. She was medalist at the Great Midwest Fall Invitational.

Torres helped lead Findlay to the team title as the Oilers had a 31-stroke margin of victory distanced from runner-up Trevecca. Findlay’s team effort was notable as the top of the team standings was crowded with first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh-place finishers. Even individual Kelsey Koesters recorded a top-10 finish outside of the team scoring.

The junior held off Trevecca sophomore Rachael McMahan, last year’s G-MAC Championship runner-up and conference freshman of the year. Only three shots separated the talented pair from first and second.

Torres carded an even par-72 during the first round and continues to be the league leader in scoring average through 3.5 rounds with a 74.3 mark.
