Final 2016-17 Learfield Directors Cup Standings
CLEVELAND – A total of 12 either current or incoming Great Midwest Athletic Conference institutions were represented in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings based on fall, winter and spring competition in 2016-17.
A total of 14 different sports from the spring (seven men, seven women) could be counted towards the final 2016-17 Learfield Division II Directors’ Cup Standings.
Findlay received 458.50 points throughout the course of the year to finish 26th in the standings. The Oilers enjoyed strong spring performances in women’s golf and outdoor track and field after finishing winter sports in 13th.
Between men’s golf, women’s tennis and men’s outdoor track and field, 2018-19 member Tiffin was close behind with 407 points to finish 36th in the standings.
Other incoming GLIAC schools Hillsdale (96th – 222.50 points), Walsh (124th – 169.75) and Lake Erie (216th – 50.50), also appeared in the final list.
Bolstered by two outdoor track and field national champions, Cedarville topped the current Great Midwest members in the standings with 60 points. 800-meter champion Carsyn Koch and 3K steeple champion Daniel Michalski helped the Yellow Jackets accumulate 104.50 points in the spring alone.
Next was Malone in 163rd and Ursuline in 166th. Both schools celebrated their own national track and field champs as Duke Taylor and Janelle Perry stood atop the podium in Florida for their respective events.
Also appearing in the final list was Kentucky Wesleyan (170th – 100 points), Ohio Valley (245th – 36 points), Davis & Elkins (248th – 25 points) and Trevecca Nazarene (266th – 5 points).
The Great Midwest is preparing for the transition to welcome in Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh, effective on July 1.
Grand Valley State captured its 12th Division II Learfield Directors' Cup. California Baptist was the runner-up while West Florida, UC San Diego and Queens (NC) rounded out the top five.
The top performing school inside the Midwest Region outside of Grand Valley State was the University of Indianapolis (GLVC), which placed 17th.
