INDIANAPOLIS – Davis & Elkins freshman Ivan Bondarenko was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week to kick off the spring campaign.
 
The Senators were in action against future G-MAC member Walsh in dual action and also competed at the Morgantown Invitational with all West Virginia schools in attendance.
 
Bondarenko won the Flight A singles bracket with three wins, including a pair of victories over ITA Atlantic Region-ranked opponents, #20 Lucas Alves of Fairmont State and #15 Micah Hornek, also from FSU.
 
In singles quarterfinal action, Bondarenko went three sets with Marc van den Boom of West Virginia Wesleyan. The third set only went one game due to the tournament format and D&E’s Bondarenko won, 10-2.
 
A very similar result unfolded in the semis as he outlasted Alves, 10-8, in the final and only game of the third set. Bondarenko won the first set, 6-4.
 
In the final, Bondarenko beat Hornek in the first set, 6-1, before his opponent retired.
 
He also picked up a doubles win with teammate Tare Mariga in the Flight A division.
 
The Senators are back in tournament action this weekend in Charleston.
