INDIANAPOLIS – Davis & Elkins junior Tare Mariga was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
 
Mariga and the Senators were in tournament action for the second straight week, this time at the Charleston Invitational.
 
Mariga is the second Senator to receive weekly spring honors after freshman teammate Ivan Bondarenko was named G-MAC Athlete of the Week prior.
 
Mariga advanced to the Flight A doubles final while earning a singles win as D&E once again competed with in-state competition from institutions like Charleston, West Virginia State, Bluefield State and West Liberty.
 
Mariga won his quarterfinal singles match against Alek Gracin of Charleston in dramatic fashion, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-5). He faced Luca Ockernahl of Bluefield State in the semis.
 
In doubles, Mariga and Bondarenko teamed up to bring down Andrew Ponder and Matt Tully of West Liberty, 9-8. They won 8-6 in the quarterfinals against a pairing from Charleston.
 
The semifinals produced the same score as Mariga and Bondarenko improved to 3-0 in the tourney as a tandem against a combo from Bluefield State.
 
The perfect doubles run came to an end in the final against Baptiste Perrin and Santiago Gutierrez of West Liberty. Mariga and Bondarenko battled to an 8-6 finish.
