INDIANAPOLIS – Davis & Elkins junior Kollin Hopwood was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Athlete of the Month for his work on the links in October.
As a whole, the conference has made noticeable strides in their tournaments during the fall, and the Senators have impressed as much as anyone.
Leading the way has been Hopwood, who shined in two events, the Bluefield State-hosted Tazewell Invitational and the Ohio Valley Highlands Cup Challenge.
On Oct. 4-5, he claimed medalist honors as the top individual with a two-day total of 150. His first round was a 74 while he ended the tournament with a 76. The Senators had a total of four in the top-10 individual finishers.
Hopwood was vying for medalist status once again at the Highlands Cup Challenge and he led the Senators’ scoring efforts in this event as well.
Tying for second individually, Hopwood posted a 71 while carding a second-round score of 75.
In four rounds, Hopwood’s scoring average was at 74.00 even. On the season, he is one of the top 10 best in the league in scoring at 75.50 through five team events as D&E gets ready for the spring.
Hopwood also heads into the spring with three consecutive finishes of at least placing in the top four. He also tied for fourth in the Wally Edgell DII Championship in September.
He has already shattered his 2015-16 season best scores of 73 and is on pace to topple his sophomore scoring average of 79.57 in 21 total rounds.
