MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – For the third straight year, Trevecca Nazarene was able to hoist a men’s golf postseason trophy after winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday.
Only three strokes separated the top-three placewinners as players and spectators held their breath as scorecards slowly trickled in during the afternoon.
In the end, the Trojans edged out Alderson Broaddus by one stroke with a three-round total of 982 (
328-332-322) for top honors as the team race came down to the wire.
Clouding the standings and closing the gap even further was a pair of unforeseen final-round disqualifications from two golfers that were in the top 10 individually.
Cedarville was just one stroke back from Alderson Broaddus while Ohio Valley, Davis & Elkins and Kentucky Wesleyan, rounded out the team scoring.
A total of 54 holes were completed the past two days with blustery conditions and wild winds again playing a factor in today’s final round.
The field was able to get on the course at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and Alistair Cameron, a soft-spoken English product, let his game do the talking.
Carrying a six-stroke lead following two rounds of play on Monday, Cameron finished with the lead in all three rounds to capture medalist honors in wire-to-wire fashion.
Consistency was the key for Cameron again, who was pleased with his sophomore season progress while posting a low round of 74 this spring. He protected his six-shot lead with a round of 78 (+6) for a two-day total of 229.
Alderson Broaddus’ James Jeffries was the runner-up for the second time in his career to lead the Battlers while Ohio Valley’s Jorge Herrera surged with his last two rounds to move into third.
Kentucky Wesleyan’s Patrick Schirmer established himself in fourth and a tie for fifth developed between Cedarville’s John Sandlas and AB’s Seth Vannoy. All six student-athletes were recognized as first-team all-conference performers.
For the fresh era of TNU head coach David Head, adding a pair of G-MAC Championship trophies (also coaches women) turned out to be a fine way to highlight a successful debut.
TNU made up 15 strokes of ground to stake its claim in first after Cedarville went into the final round with a four-shot lead over Alderson Broaddus.
Three Trojans found their way into the top 10 of the final individuals – Aaron Burnett, Spencer Scarbrough and Garrett Evans. Burnett tied for seventh while Scarbrough and Evans had a share of 10th.
The G-MAC coaches will vote for additional award winners later this week.
