2.4.15

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The flurry at the end of February will be one to watch within the Great Midwest Athletic Conference as the basketball playoff pictures take shape and indoor track and field student-athletes showcase their talents on the championship stage.

Baseball season is underway for one team (Salem International) with a few others celebrating their respective opening day in the near future. Softball is also scheduled to debut this weekend and golf and tennis will soon be on the horizon as the weather warms up.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Entering the week in a first-place stalemate with Kentucky Wesleyan (16-5, 5-2 G-MAC), Alderson Broaddus (14-6, 7-2 G-MAC) took advantage of an idle portion in the Panthers’ schedule, blazing its way to a two-game lead in the still-developing G-MAC standings.

Driven by a monster two-game stretch from Tobias Dowdell, AB racked up wins against Ohio Valley (5-12, 4-5 G-MAC) and Salem International (3-15, 1-8 G-MAC) as the senior produced a double-double average of 17.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game.

Dowdell’s numbers across the board have increased considerably since the start of conference play and he joins Malcolm Tatum as Battlers to garner weekly conference accolades this season.

KWC and Central State (13-8, 5-2 G-MAC) now find themselves in pursuit of Alderson Broaddus tied for second in the league. The Panthers will make the trek to Nashville to face Trevecca Nazarene (8-11, 4-3 G-MAC) on Thursday and the Marauders will welcome Davis & Elkins and AB to town this week.

After Kentucky Wesleyan trounced Oakland City in non-conference action, the Panthers will try to look to remain sharp after not playing a game since over a week ago on Jan. 28.

Plenty is on the line for TNU and Cedarville (8-13, 4-3 G-MAC), who both form another tie, this time for fourth in the conference. The Yellow Jackets suffered a tough loss on their home floor to Central State and cap a four-game homestand this weekend vs. AB and D&E.

The Trojans will play their first game in February tomorrow and will try and take advantage of five of their seven games in February at home to wrap up the regular season. TNU was on the short end against a tough King squad that is 17-4 despite 18 points from Matt Gamberoni and Byron Sanford.

For the moment, Ohio Valley has a grasp on the important sixth seed in the conference tournament if the postseason was to begin today. Davis & Elkins (6-13, 2-7 G-MAC) and Salem International are a few games back and anything can happen down the stretch of the regular season.

SIU made school history by completing the program's first-ever conference road win at Davis & Elkins during the team's weekly split. Tyler Bell came alive with 31 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc. He also canned 12 of his 14 tries at the free throw line.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

As separation in the middle of the conference standings began to take more form following this past weekend, it stayed just as tight at the top. Davis & Elkins (10-8, 6-4 G-MAC) toppled its opponents averaging a total 91.5 points while only giving up 41.5. Sharmaine Baker collected her second G-MAC Athlete of the Week honor of the season while averaging 23.0 ppg and bringing down 6.5 boards. Baker shot 14-of-22 from the field and 17-of-21 from the charity stripe.

D&E’s Stephanie Wooten also contributed 12.5 ppg and 9 apg. The point guard leads the conference with 6.4 assists per game.

Salem International (0-22, 0-10 G-MAC) tried to secure its first win of the season while falling to D&E and Alderson Broaddus (6-13, 4-6 G-MAC). The Tigers host Ursuline (3-18, 2-8 G-MAC) this weekend as both teams will try and make a push for the conference tournament in March.

After Alderson Broaddus defeated Salem International while forcing 22 turnovers in their first game of the week, the Battlers dropped a tough one to Ohio Valley (5-14, 4-6 G-MAC) to fall back into a tie for fifth place in the conference. AB’s Rachel Ashley got back on track averaging 13 ppg with 10.5 rpg. The Fighting Scots of OVU had all five starters score in double-digits while outrebounding AB. OVU senior Amy Brooks leads the G-MAC with 8.4 boards per game.

Ursuline dropped respective contests to Trevecca Nazarene (10-9, 7-2 G-MAC) and Kentucky Wesleyan (13-6, 8-1 G-MAC); the Arrows are looking for their first road win since early December when OVU and SIU play host to UC this coming weekend. The Arrows are only two games out of the all-important sixth spot in the conference.

Sitting in third place in the G-MAC, Trevecca Nazarene will host KWC this Saturday in a pivotal league matchup. KWC’s Jennifer Walker-Crawford averaged 13.5 ppg in the Panthers’ two wins last week. KWC also traveled to Oakland City where they left with a 23-point margin of victory.

In its lone matchup of the week, Central State (6-13, 3-6 G-MAC) took on Cedarville (19-2, 9-0 G-MAC), but the Lady Jackets proved too much for the Marauders as they inched that much closer to landing a spot in the nation’s top-25 teams.

Cedarville has won nine straight and 17 of their last 18. Raegan Ryan averaged 7.5 assists in the two wins against CSU and non-conference vs. Wilberforce.

Three of the G-MAC’s teams were in action this past week.

Cedarville placed first out of seven teams at the Cedarville Collegiate Invitational. Carsyn Koch, who was named the G-MAC Women’s Athlete of the Week, finished at the top of several competitions. The freshman tied for second in the high jump as she jumped 1.62m. Teammates Abigail Williams and Carly Rose also finished in the top 10. Koch also finished atop the leaderboard in the 800m, posting a time of 2:19.09. Anchored by Koch, the distance medley team also finished first.

The Lady Jackets had seven runners finish in the top 11 in the mile. Carly Rose finished with a time of 5:19.66 to finish second. Anna Pomento took home first-place honors in both the weight throw and shot put.

For the Cedarville men, freshman Josiah Bernard led the way taking home G-MAC Men’s Athlete of the Week honors. Bernard won the 400m with a time of 51.35, and also a part of the 4x400 relay team that crossed the finish line first. The freshman placed third in high jump at 1.92m.

James Blackwell won the pole vault competition hoisting himself 4.7m. Teammate Aaron Sturgeon finished second. Defending G-MAC AOTW Andre Klaassen finished second in the 200m.

Both the men’s and women’s Trevecca teams stayed in Nashville and made the crosstown trip to Tennessee State University.

Freshman phenom Caroline Hampton set another school record, posting a mile time of 5:15.06 and was a member of the distance medley relay winning unit. Hoffman also took home first place in the 400m.

For the men, Ben Moroney and Brandon Laws finished first in the mile and 800m, respectively. Former G-MAC Athlete of the Week Taylor Flemming finished third in the 800m while Laws ran to a fourth-place finish. Moroney and Laws also helped guide the distance medley team to victory.

Ursuline competed at the SPIRE Midwest Open. Senior Bea Indurain led the way as she set a school and G-MAC record in the 60m hurdles of 8.64 seconds, a time that puts her third in Division II. The time also automatically places Indurain in the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. She also finished sixth in the 60m dash.

With Keyana Roberts, the 4x400 relay team placed third with a time of 3:57.99. Individually, Roberts took third in the 200m.
