VOLLEYBALL
Trevecca (8-3) and Ursuline (6-1) continued their winning ways, extending respective streaks heading into the conference schedule this weekend. For the second time this year, the Trojans held off a pesky Oakland City program that went into a five-set final.
Trevecca beat Oakland City in a back-and-forth contest that also lasted five sets on Sept. 12 while hosting the Scott Jones Classic. Since the Trojans started the fall 1-3, seventh-year head coach Jayme Crowley and her program have reeled off a current seven-match win streak.
Katelyn Atkinson (19 kills), Delaney Hearne (16 kills, .325) and Loren Bennett (53 assists, 12 digs) were all pivotal in TU’s latest effort in the midst of a five-game road trip.
Gulf South Conference opponent Christian Brothers along with a tri-match event featuring Arkansas Tech and Union are schedule for Trevecca this weekend.
The Arrows of Ursuline have won six straight, their latest victory coming against Notre Dame (Ohio). Emily Adkinson has led all NCAA Division II players in hitting percentages through the first two statistical reports and is currently attacking a .470 clip this season.
Setter Molly Hilfinger is averaging 10.28 assists per set and even over a kill per frame as Ursuline continues to hit at a G-MAC-best .256 this season. The Arrows were ranked 12th in the nation in hitting percentage going into the mid-week contest.
After collecting the first win in the conference schedule, Alderson Broaddus (3-9, 1-0 G-MAC) ran into a buzz saw against Fairmont State, which improved to 10-2. Megan Christmann led the way with nine kills while reigning G-MAC Athlete of the Week Caitlin Cain added six.
Salem International (0-7) continues to battle while the Tigers search for the program’s first-ever victory. Rachel Hess had 13 kills and SIU had a team total of 76 digs against West Liberty earlier this week.
Ohio Valley (7-7) evened its season record with a five-set triumph against West Virginia Wesleyan (stats not available) and Kentucky Wesleyan had a bizarre postponement with a power outage against SIAC perennial powerhouse Kentucky State. The Panthers had won the first set and the second set was knotted at 26-26 before the match was called. The two teams will continue at a later date to be determined.
Conference play heats up this weekend with three G-MAC contests slated for Friday and an additional three more league bouts on tap for Saturday.
