G-MAC Snapshot Focus: Sept. 15-17

9.18.14

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference schedule officially gets underway for men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball this week as head-to-head battles between league opponents will ultimately determine regular-season supremacy.

Teams from the G-MAC continue to pass various tests from non-conference competition while attempting to position themselves with strong resumes in order to catch the eye of regional rankings committees.

For example, the three heavy-hitting opponents on Davis & Elkins’ men’s soccer schedule have recently vaulted up further into the NSCAA Coaches Poll at No. 11 (Quincy), No. 19 (Tiffin) and No. 22 (Notre Dame). ND and Tiffin were previously unranked in the opening poll.

Slippery Rock, ranked seventh in the NSCAA women’s soccer preseason poll, played Davis & Elkins just a few days after dropping out altogether. The Senators also had then-No. 11 California (Pa.) on the schedule, dueling the Vulcans to a double-overtime scoreless draw.

The Cedarville women’s soccer program made an appearance at No. 10 in the Midwest Region according to Sept. 9 NSCAA Regional Rankings.

Time will continue to tell how the G-MAC Preseason Coaches polls will eventually play out and there figures to be some intriguing storylines and tight races forming as the regular season unfolds.

MEN'S SOCCER

Four teams were in action since Monday  as Kentucky Wesleyan recorded a 4-2 win -- its first victory of the season -- over Cumberland as the Panthers mounted a second-half surge with all four scores.

KWC’s Christakis Agisilaou tallied the equalizer early in the second period and Gary McMeekin’s 60th-minute score represented the eventual game winner.

Salem International (2-1-1) forced a double-overtime final against Seton Hill on the road, but the Griffins dealt the decisive blow in the 103rd minute. Trevecca (3-2) outshot Asbury, 20-9, but the Trojans were unable to find the net in a defensive struggle that resulted in a closely-contested 1-0 decision.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Cedarville (3-1) made a compelling argument to move up in the regional rankings with an impressive home win against previously unbeaten Ashland from the GLIAC.

Grace Miorelli scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets and goalie Hanna Harris stopped six shots.

Ohio Dominican sprayed 30 shots to none versus Alderson Broaddus (0-2) and the Battlers had to stay on their toes defensively as netminder Sarah Turner recorded 11 saves. ODU scored all three goals within a 15-minute span as the Panthers broke open a scoreless tie right before halftime.

VOLLEYBALL

A few winning streaks were sustained and a couple interrupted as a heavy dose of tournament play starts to give way for the one-on-one conference matchups.

Trevecca (7-3) assembled its sixth consecutive win with a sweep against Covenant, including a thrilling 33-31 second-set triumph. The Trojans started their current win streak on Sept. 9 and won all three matches at their own hosted tourney.

Ohio Valley (4-5), facing a familiar opponent in Urbana, was edged out in a five-set thriller as the Fighting Scots had their win streak halted at four straight. OVU had the Blue Knights on the ropes, but couldn’t quite deliver the final knockout blow after winning the first two sets.

Last night, Ursuline (4-1) took care of business on the road with another sweep and the Arrows are now winners of four straight. In the NCAA’s first statistical report, Ursuline ranked fourth in the nation in hitting percentage as a team (.306) and Emily Adkinson’s .565 attacking clip led all players in Division II.

Kentucky Wesleyan (3-3) evened up its season record at .500 while Cedarville and Salem International suffered setbacks against Bellarmine and Virginia at Wise, respectively.

Tuesday featured a total of six matches around the league, including the season debut for Central State (0-1).
