GREENWOOD, Ind. - After surveying the football landscape with three Great Midwest Athletic Conference institutions in action again this past weekend, a high-flying offense from Alderson Broaddus University (ranked fourth nationally) grounded yet another opponent to remain unbeaten early in the year.
One week after churning out record numbers on the ground against Pace, the Battlers (2-0) launched an aerial attack this time around against overmatched Chowan University, including nearly 500 yards from prolific quarterback Wilson Vaughn, who continues to turn heads around the country with his play.
Vaughn has amassed 688 yards through the air in two games this year, ranking seventh nationally among all Division II signal callers. He was also named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week, the second week in a row Alderson Broaddus has staked claim to the honor after running back Brandon Jones earned the distinction earlier.
ABU has now outscored its opponents by a combined score of 104-44 after the 47-7 home rout against Chowan.
In other games involving G-MAC schools, Kentucky Wesleyan College ran into a tough matchup with No. 18 Lindsey Wilson College in an intrastate battle falling 62-10 while Central State University was edged 30-16 in the tropic atmosphere of Nassau, Bahamas, by Texas Southern University as a focal point in the HBCUX Classic.
Alderson Broaddus 47, Chowan 7
Vaughn shredded the Chowan defense on 37-of-43 passing and connected with tight end Cooper Schroeder for three of his five passing touchdowns.
The Battlers had a 28-0 cushion in the second quarter, capped with a 53-yard interception return for a score by Macolm Lee, before Chowan put its first and only points on the scoreboard. ABU forced three turnovers, including a pair of fumbles and the Battlers converted 12-of-18 third-down opportunties, a category that currently has them ranked tops in the nation.
Schroeder capped off respective drives of 73 and 71 yards in the second quarter by hauling in 25 and 18-yard scores. He also ended an eight play, 78-yard drive in the fourth quarter with time expiring with his third TD grab from 22 yards out.
Jones produced over 100 yards on 26 carries and the diminutive back had 95 more yards receiving on six catches.
No. 18 Lindsey Wilson 62, Kentucky Wesleyan 10
Kentucky Wesleyan (0-2) left Blue Raider Stadium in Columbia still in search of its first win this season after Lindsey Wilson doubled the Panthers' offensive output with 604 total yards. More than half were accumulated on the ground where a stable of four tailbacks each had at least 50 yards rushing.
LWU quarterback Brendan Cresap threw for three touchdowns as the Blue Raiders pulled away with 48 unanswered points.
Kentucky Wesleyan trailed by just four points at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 40-yard field goal by Cole Woodburn and some special teams production with a kickoff return for a score by Xavier Mitchell.
Texas Southern 30, Central State 16
Central State's bid to move to 2-0 on the year was cut short against Texas Southern, who moved to 3-0 this fall at Thomas Robinson Stadium. With the Marauders (1-1) trailing 20-3 early in the third quarter, a three-yard Moises Vine scamper and a pick six for Christian Wilson brought Central State to within four by the start of the final period.
TSU prevented any additional rally hopes with 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats eventually prevailed in an entertaining defensive struggle.
