Monthly G-MAC Golf Award Honors

5.2.14

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference second half of the year comes to a close with Evan DeGrazia of Davis & Elkins and Kaylon King of Trevecca Nazarene being named the Men's and Women's Golf Athlete of the Month.

MEN’S GOLFER OF THE MONTH

Evan DeGrazia
Davis & Elkins - Freshman
Thunder Bay, Canada - St. Ignatius

The 2013-14 spring men’s golf season came to a close in April and for the second time this spring a D&E Senator has been named G-MAC’s Men’s Golfer of the Month as the freshman Evan DeGrazia led Davis & Elkins College throughout the month and earned medalist honors at the 2014 G-MAC Men’s Golf Championships on a very difficult course.

In the past month, D&E took part in The Jewell, the IUP Invitational, and the conference championship tournament. At the Jewell the team placed 19th, then improved to 8th at IUP and had a strong third round to climb into third in the conference behind DeGrazia’s medalist performance.

At The Jewell, DeGrazia fired a 151 (74-77) to tie for the team lead with Ian Clark, the March Golfer of the Month, to tie for 24th. At IUP, DeGrazia finished 23rd with a 149 (72-77). However, his best performance came at the G-MAC Championships, where he finished first with a three round total of 228. His first day total of 148 (74-74) was very impressive as 74 was the best round of the entire day and he did it twice to take the lead after the first two rounds.

WOMEN’S GOLFER OF THE MONTH

Kaylon King
Trevecca Nazarene University - Sophomore
Hartselle, Alabama - Hartselle High School

The 2013-14 spring women’s golf season opened up in March with TNU’s Alexa Rippy being named G-MAC’s Women’s Golfer of the Month and now has closed with Kaylon King being named Golfer of the Month for April as King helped lead Trevecca Nazarene to their second consecutive G-MAC Women’s Golf Championship. King herself, earned Medalist honors for her individual performance at the event.

In April, the Trojans only competed in two events and King brought home a second place finish at the Ohio Valley Invitational, and then a first place finish at the G-MAC Championship. At the OVU Invitational, King fired a 157 (80-77). Her second round total of 77 was a round low in a field of 72, but she finished three strokes behind the leader who shot a first round 76.

At the G-MAC Championships, which was shortened to only 18 holes due to wintery weather on day two of the event, King’s first round 82 at TPC-River’s Bend was enough to capture Medalist honors. She just beat out teammate Rippy for the honor and held off a pair of Ursuline Arrows who tied for third with an 84.

-----------------------
Men’s and Women’s Golf name an Athlete of the Month, rather than Athlete of the Week due to the fact that the NCAA golf season covers both the fall and spring semesters. The randomness of a specific golf schedule also does not adapt itself well to a weekly award since there are weeks in which a team may not play and tournaments are not restricted to weekends only. Winners will be announced following the months of September, October, March, and April.
