INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference athletic calendar year has come to a close with the completion of the 2014 Baseball Championships this past weekend at Prasco Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the recent announcement of Cedarville University securing the Presidents' Cup, it is time for the G-MAC to announce its end of the year honors, starting with the 2013-14 Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The awards will be presented on Thursday evening in Nashville, Tennessee during the conferences Spring Meetings and Awards Reception. Following the reception, we will be posting videos featuring comments from all four of our major award winners.

MALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Jared Gerber - Cedarville University - Men's Tennis

Jared Gerber played all four years with the Men’s Tennis program and was the team captain this past season. His career stats include an overall singles record of  22-14 and was 36-30 in doubles.

Gerber exceled in the classroom were he was an Allied Health major with a Bible minor. He has maintained a 3.94 GPA and has been accepted in the physical therapy graduate program at the University of Iowa.

He was also very involved in Christian service as he worked with a traveling church camp in the summers, worked a mission trip to a Navajo reservation in 2012, and participated on the Cedarville tennis mission trip to China in 2013.

Gerber was a Discipleship Leader in 2012 and was apart of the Discipleship Council in 2013. He served as a Resident Advisor for a campus dorm, was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (2012-14), and served as President of the Cedarville SAAC.

Gerber was the treasurer of the Allied Health Student Organization and volunteers at the Green Memorial Hospital in Xenia, Ohio.

FEMALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - Natalie Huggins - Ursuline College - Softball

Natalie Huggins was a four-year starter for the Arrow’s softball team, shared team MVP honors as a sophomore and again as a junior (note: this seasons team awards have not been announced).

Her coach reports Natalie goes out of her way to take care of the team and encourages them to make good decisions; often leading the team study tables, and participating in team sponsored community events.  She has been awarded the NFCA scholar-athlete award.

Outside of athletics Natalie is a resident assistant, acts in school plays, and works in admissions. Her 3.69 GPA does not begin to describe who she is as a student. Natalie is double majoring in Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) Licensure in Language Arts and AYA Licensure in Mathematics.

Each of these degrees requires the student to also major in the corresponding content area; for Natalie this is Mathematics and English. Therefore Huggins will be graduating with four undergraduate degrees.  She has chosen this curriculum to make her a versatile teacher who can also coach.
