INDIANAPOLIS – As part of the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence program, now in its fourth year, Great Midwest Athletic Conference institutions Cedarville University and Davis & Elkins College were recognized for their notable percentages.
Simon Fraser (B.C.) led Division II with a perfect ASR of 100 percent, meaning all student-athletes from the 2004-07 cohort graduated within six years of original enrollment.
Davis & Elkins reported an ASR of 99 percent, ranking second nationally, and Cedarville posted an ASR of 91 percent, respectively. D&E and CU are among 24 schools to receive the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference was tied for third among conferences with the most member institutions achieving a rate of 90 percent or higher. Additionally, six of the nine institutions in the G-MAC posted an ASR of 70 percent or higher.
The national four-year ASR is 71 percent.
The Academic Success Rate measures graduation success for Division II schools and includes virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletics scholarships. In 2012-13, only 62 percent of Division II student-athletes receive some level of athletics aid.
The Division II ASR also captures about 54 percent more student-athletes than the federal graduation rate. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the ASR also counts student-athletes who transfer to a school after initial enrollment elsewhere and removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible.
Regardless of which measure is used, Division II student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. The federal rate for the 2007 entering class of student-athletes was 55 percent, compared to 48 percent for the general student body.
