INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has announced its 2013-14 Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Danny Goins of Urbana University and Samantha Gauvin of Ursuline College have been voted the inaugural winners of this honor.
Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Samantha Gauvin of Ursuline College was a senior member of the softball program. She graduated in May of 2013 Magna Cum Lauda with a grade point average of 3.8664 in Psychology. She earned Departmental Honors and was inducted into Psi Chi, which is an International Honor Society in Psychology.
Gauvin served a Vice-President and President of Psi Chi, and also had the honor to present her research at Annual Ohio Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference. She was President of the Allies Student Organization, was a member of SAAC, and volunteered at Butler Hospital, which is a private mental health hospital in her home state of Rhode Island.
Following graduation, she plans to continue her education and earn a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She is currently working at Cleveland Clinic with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Athletically she was a four-year member of the softball program and received the Blue & Gold Coach’s Award in 2012 for selflessness and team-first attitude.
Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Danny Goins of Urbana University was a junior/senior member of the Men’s Basketball. He enter the year as a junior, but graduated Cum Laude after taking 43 credit hours in 2012-13 to graduate in just three years. He earned a perfect 4.0 in those final 43 credit hours and raised his overall grade point average to 3.64 in Business Administration.
Following graduation Goins will pursue his MBA at Urbana next year. He served two years as President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Urbana, and volunteered/organized multiple events in the Church and campus community.
Athletically he averaged 15.0 points per game and was a G-MAC Men’s Basketball Second Team All-Conference selection.
