OWENSBORO, Ky. (Courtesy of Luke Shelley, KWC Student-Athlete and @KWCPanthers) - The Daniel Pitino Shelter had some new servers this past Wednesday. Some members of the Kentucky Wesleyan College men’s basketball team went to the Shelter to help serve lunch to the some of Owensboro and Daviess County’s homeless.
 
The Pitino Shelter has been helping the homeless since 1995. This shelter helps to create emergency and transitional housing for the growing number of homeless persons in Owensboro-Daviess County region.
 
When the members of the team arrived at the shelter they were given some very good-looking hairnets and gloves. The Panthers were looking good and ready to help the community.
 
The members of the Panther squad had a very enjoyable and educational experience.
 
“Talking to and learning about these peoples lives really gives you a new perspective on the homeless problem,” said junior guard Luke Shelley from Australia. “A number of people that we served had college degrees and had one to break their back break. It really makes you appreciate what you have.”
 
The other members of the squad also had an eye opening experience as well but said that they really enjoyed getting to know these wonderful people.
 
Junior forward James Herzog from Owensboro added, “I had a great time getting to know these people and I am glad I could help out.”
 
The Panthers were very grateful for this experience. They were very glad they could assist the community and get to meet such great people at the same time.
