10.3.12

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has released its first ever Men's and Women's Golf Athletes of the Month for September 2012. Jacob Forsythe of Cedarville University and Chasey Rotondo of Ursuline College are the awards inaugural winners.

Jacob Forsythe
Cedarville University

Forsythe has been named the first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Month for men’s golf. In the month of September, Forsythe led the Cedarville Yellow Jackets to two top five finishes in three tournaments, and led the conference in individual performances.

Individually, Forsythe fired the top overall 36-hole score in conference, coming in his most recent tournament. At the NCAA Great Lakes Fall Regional (9/30 - 10/1), he shot an impressive even par two-day score (144) to finish in a tie for third place in a field of 120 golfers.

Forsythe also shot the three lowest 18-hole rounds in conference. At the first round of the Atlantic Region Invitation (9/17), he posted the club-house lead with a 2-under 70. Maybe more impressive was his 1-under 71 during the first round of the NCAA Great Lakes Fall Regional (9/31). The course played at 6,977 yards, which was the longest yardage of the year for any tournament in the conference, and 499 yards longer than the course at the Atlantic Region Invitation.

In his other 18-hole rounds, Forsythe ranks in a three-way tie for 3rd with a one-over 73 second round at the NCAA Great Lakes Fall Regional, and is in a four-way tie for 6th with a two-over 74 second round at Cedarville’s home Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Forsythe’s 36-hole performances rank 1st (Even Par - 144 at the NCAA Great Lakes Fall Regional), 4th (+6 - 150 at the Bluegrass Fall Classic) and in a tie for 6th (+8 - 152 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational) in conference.

Chasey Rotondo
Ursuline College - Freshman

Rotondo has been named the first-ever Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Month for women’s golf. In the month of September, Rotondo helped guide the Ursuline Arrows to the top three 18-hole team scores in the conference, as well as posting the lowest 18-hole average and the most consistent scores in the conference.

Individually, Rotondo has played five rounds of golf in four tournaments. Her top round was her most recent as she fired a 81 in the second round of the Clarion Invitational (9/23). To the other extreme, her worst score of the month was an 85, which she shot on two different occasions - most recently in the first round of the Clarion Invitational (9/22). Her average over the five rounds was an impressive 83.6.

Rotondo’s round of 83 at the Evann Parker Memorial ranks third in conference for 18-hole tournament scores, while her two-day total of 166 (85-81) ranks in a three-way tie for third for best 36-hole performance in conference. Her individual second round score of 81, also ranks in a tie for third as the best individual 18-holes in conference.

As a team, Ursuline has three top-five finishes including a first place finish at the St. Vincent Lady Bearcat Invitational in which they shot 328, which was the best 18-hole tournament team performance in the conference for the month.

The Arrows also own the second and third best 18-hole tournament team performances in September, shooting a 343 at the Evann Parker Memorial (t-5th place), and a 365 at their home Ursuline College Fall Tournament (5th place). UC took part in only one 36-hole tournament in the month, finishing 5th at the Clarion Invitational with a two day total of 679, twice shooting 18-hole scores (340 and 339) better than their second ranked 18-hole tournament score.

Men’s and Women’s Golf name an Athlete of the Month, rather than Athlete of the Week due to the fact that the NCAA golf season covers both the fall and spring semesters. The randomness of a specific golf schedule also does not adapt itself well to a weekly award since there are weeks in which a team may not play and tournaments are not restricted to weekends only. Winners will be announced following the months of September, October, March, and April.
